Taking It Deeper

Lyrics

Your love is like a river flowing from my heart
Your love is like a river flowing from my heart

When this cruel world tears us apart
Your love is like a river flowing from my heart
When sharpened words have left their scars
Your love is like a river flowing from my heart

And it's overflowing and showing us all
How deep and how wide is Your love
It never stops, it rages on
Your love is like a river flowing from my heart

When I am tired and so afraid
Your love is like a fire that will light my way
When darkness falls and my vision fades
You love is like a fire that will light my way

And it's always burning and stirring my soul
To know You and love You much more
It never stops or ever fades
Your love is like a fire that will light my way

Oh, it's never gonna stop
Oh, it's flowing from my heart
Oh, it's never gonna fade away
Your fire will light my way

When all my strength and hope is gone
Your love is like a rock that I am standing on

Oh, it's never gonna stop
Oh, it's flowing from my heart
Oh, it's never gonna fade away

Your love is like a river flowing from my heart
Your love is like a fire that will light my way
Your love is like a rock that I am standing on
Your love is like a river flowing from my heart

TID-bits

  • There are people you don’t feel like loving today.
  • Love them anyway.
  • There are people you want to avoid today.
  • Love them anyway.
  • There are people who just get on your nerves and irritate you and are as grating on your soul as sand is in your teeth.
  • Love them anyway.
  • The best way we can experience love is by showing love to others who we feel are unworthy.
  • That’s what Jesus did.

---------------------------------------

  • Have you ever been on the wrong side of a story?
  • Someone maybe posts a negative review of where you work, something untrue based on conjecture and gossip.
  • Do you get into a disagreement about it, or do you do as Jesus suggested and turn the other cheek?
  • Do you trust God enough to handle it?
  • So that you can focus on something more important - the love that He wants you to show others?

---------------------------------------

  • The heart is a tireless workhorse.
  • Day after day it pumps away.
  • Yet it is the one thing that we will shut off when we feel we’ve been wronged.
  • So - What happens when a real heart is shut off?
  • We die.
  • The same thing happens when we shut off our emotional heart, when that happens relationships die.
  • That’s why God will never cut off his love toward you.
  • He wants that relationship with you.

---------------------------------------

  • According to this (that) song - It’s something that binds...
  • Something that heals...
  • Something that guides...
  • Something that strengthens...
  • and it’s something that never stops...
  • It’s one thing - God’s love - and that’s just a few things it does.

---------------------------------------

  • Think of God’s love as your computer, or smartphone, or tablet
  • It’s just one device, yet with all it’s software or apps - it’s able to do many things.
  • If you know Jesus, then you have that one amazing thing - God’s love - in your heart.
  • And that love is able to do so many things in your life, like heal your hurts, guide your path, and strengthen your resolve.

---------------------------------------

  • Take a close listen to this song
  • You’ll hear the first verse talk about healing
  • You’ll hear the second verse talk about guidance
  • and you’ll hear the bridge talk about strengthening
  • Yet the song is only talking about one thing - God’s love.
  • It’s pretty amazing all the stuff that it does.

    Scripture References

    1 John 4:19-20

We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, “I love God,” yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.

    --------------------------------------

    Philemon 1:6-7

I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ.   Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints.

    ---------------------------------------

    Psalm 86:15

But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious,  slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.

    ---------------------------------------

    Psalm 136:26

Give thanks to the God of heaven,  for his steadfast love endures forever.

    ---------------------------------------

    Romans 5:2-5

Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

    --------------------------------------

    1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.

    Your Own Experiences

Invite the listeners to think of someone they know who overflows with God’s love.   Ask them if this song describes them.

    ---------------------------------------

Have you ever tossed a floating object into a river and watched it be carried away?   Compare that to tossing a problem God’s way - and trusting that He will carry it off.

    --------------------------------------

Do you wear glasses?   Then you can compare them to God’s love. When we look at those who wrong us, or exasperate us, through the lens of His love, we  see them differently.   The trick is that we always have to put those lenses on - just like we always have to put on our glasses.
