Taking It Deeper

Lyrics

I felt it first when I was younger
A strange connection to the light
I tried to satisfy the hunger
I never got it right
I never got it right

So I climbed a mountain and l built an altar
Looked out as far as I could see
And everyday I’m getting older
I’m running outta dreams
I’m running outta dreams

But Your love
Your love
The only the thing that matters is Your love
Your love is all I have to give
Your love is enough to light up the darkness
It’s Your love
Your love
all I ever needed is Your love

You know the effort I have given
And you know exactly what it cost
And though my innocence was taken
Not everything is lost
Not everything is lost nooooo

But Your love
Your love
The only the thing that matters is Your love
Your love is all I have to give
Your love is enough to light up the darkness
It’s Your love
Your love
all I ever needed is Your love

You’re the hope in the morning
You’re the light when the night is falling
You’re the song when my heart is singing
it’s Your love

You’re the eyes to the blind man
You’re the feet to the lame man walking
You’re the sound of the people singing
It’s Your love

But Your love
Your love
The only the thing that matters is Your love
Your love is all I have to give
Your love is enough to light up the darkness
It’s Your love
Your love
all I ever needed is Your love

But Your love
(Your love is all that I needed)
The only the thing that matters is Your love
Your love is all I have to give
Your love is enough to light up the darkness
(Your love is all that I needed)
It’s Your love
Your love
It’s all I ever needed

TID-bits

Grace AND Truth.   Those are the two things we need.   We need His Truth to tell us about our sin, and where we fall short,   and then we need His Grace to tell us that it’s OK that we fall short.

Andy Stanley, in his book “Deep and Wide” says that where those two meet, things get messy.   It’s because of that mess that Christians get a bad reputation.   They either focus too much on the sin, and not the sinner, in which case they show their hypocrisy (because we all sin in some way); or we focus too much on God’s grace, continually forgiving everything, which keeps people from finding healing from their sins.

This song presents that balanced approach between God’s Grace and Truth.   It focuses on God’s Love.   Brandon Heath first refers to sinning, how he “never got it right.”   He then refers that he’s trying to do good when he sings about “building an altar” and “the effort he’s given”

He realizes that he can’t stack up to God’s truth - but that doesn’t mean he won’t stop trying.   Through the trials he sees that God’s Love is the light in the darkness, and it is the source of healing.   “It brings sight to the blind man, and feet to the lame man walking.”   It is the source to keep us going as we try and fail and try again.   “Your love is all I ever needed.”

So this song can talk to anything that needs a balance of Grace and Truth brought to it:

You can tie it into any relationship we have that we shouldn’t have.   Remember when Jesus encountered the woman in an adulterous relationship?   With a voice of love He told her that her sins were forgiven (Grace) however she should go and sin no more (Truth).

Encourage the listener that if they’re having an unhealthy relationship with someone who is bad for them, or an unhealthy relationship with food, or money, or with a desire to control, that God’s love points us to His Truth.   His truth says   we shouldn’t be involved with those.   However, His Love also points to His Grace - Grace that gives us the forgiveness and power we need to get out of those relationships.

-----------------------------------------

  • We talk about “building a life.”
  •   Thinking that we are the ones who have to build it.
  •   However, I think we have it backwards.
  •   We should let God do the building.
  •   This song talks about how we try to build our lives, and about not getting it right
  •   Instead we should let His love direct us.
  •   Here’s Brandon Heath.

-----------------------------------------

  • There is a light that comes naturally.
  • It’s sunlight.
  • Then there’s all other light
  • and all other light is manmade.
  • God’s love is like that natural light.
  • Even when it’s dark on this side of the earth
  • That light is still out there
  • And it will come back around for you.

------------------------------------------

  •   Have you ever heard that there’s no such thing as “dark?”
  •   There’s only the absence of light.
  •   And if your soul is feeling dark today
  •   Maybe it’s time to ask God to fill it again with a little bit of His light...
  •   A little bit of His love.

------------------------------------------

  • Does life ever get you to the point where you just want to shout “enough is enough?”
  • When you get to that point, just stop.
  • Breathe.
  • And let the words of this song come back into your head.
  • Because what really is “enough” for your stressed out times
  • Is God’s love...
---------------------------------------------------
  • Is there something today that you need?   Whatever it is, replace it with the words “Your Love.”
  • For instance, if you find yourself saying, “wow I really need some new shoes”   immediately turn it around and say “wow, I really need some of your love, Lord”
  • Then say a prayer, thanking God for His Love.
  • This is (That was) Brandon Heath....

---------------------------------------------------

  • Wouldn’t you say that all throughout life you have this need - about finding out what you are meant for?   I know I do.
  • That’s what Brandon Heath sings about in the first verse of this song.
  • The rest of the song is about what fills that need.

---------------------------------------------------

  • I love that I can use my phone as a flashlight, especially since I’m too lazy to change the lightbulb in my garage door opener.
  • When I’m overwhelmed, and just too tired to cope with life, it’s so good to know that God’s love is enough to light up the darkness.
  • If I’m stumbling around in the dark, and feeling unable to change, sometimes calling on Him to show me His love is enough to get me to take another step.

---------------------------------------------------

  • There are three phrases repeated in this (that) song:
  • The first two:   I never got it right, and I’m running outta dreams, are pretty depressing.
  • The third though, is “not everything is lost.”
  • If you find yourself giving up on getting it right, or if you find yourself at a place where your dreams seem dashed, don’t give up.
  • Not everything is lost.   His love is the light in the darkness.

---------------------------------------------------

  • The Psalms are full of the words “unfailing love”
  • Here’s an example:   Psalm 31:15-16 My times are in your hands;   deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me. Let your face shine on your servant; save me in your unfailing love.
  • Here’s (That's) a song that reflects that love, just as we reflect it when His face shines on us.

    Your Own Experiences

Name a time in your life when God shed light on a situation for you.   Tell the listeners how you felt His love in that moment.

    ------------------------------------------

Share how you first felt that “strange connection to the light” as Brandon Heath talks about.   Relate that to how we all feel drawn to someone who loves us.

    ------------------------------------------

Maybe talk about how in school some little girl or boy “loved” you, but you didn’t love them back.   How does that relate to this song?   You have a listener out there that doesn’t love God right now.   Let them know that God will always love them especially during the times when we’re stumbling around in the dark.

    ------------------------------------------

When you found God’s love were you searching for it, or did it find you?   Tell your story about finding it.

    ------------------------------------------

Tie this song into a service project your station or church is doing.   Talk about how serving others is showing His love.   It is a way to bring hope, and to bring light to those who need it.   Something that is strongly talked about in this song.

    ------------------------------------------

When did you fall in love?   Did it consume your thoughts?   Mention that that is how God feels for you.
