Taking It Deeper

The battle rages on
As storm and tempest roar
We cannot win this fight
Inside our rebel hearts
We're laying down our weapons now
We raise our white flag
We surrender
All to You
All for You
We raise our white flag
The war is over
Love has come
Your love has won
Here on this Holy ground
You made a way for peace
Laying your body down
You took our rightful place
This freedom song is marching on
We lift the cross
Lift it high lift it high

  • What's it mean to have a rebel heart?
  • For me, it's a matter of trying to do everything my own way.
  • Ultimately it weighs me down, makes me feel heavy in my heart.
  • I have to be reminded over and over to give control of my overwhelming life to God....

  • There are plenty of management books about winning by giving up control.
  • When a boss hires talented people and gives them the authority they need to succeed, they do.
  • It's the same way spiritually.
  • When we surrender control of our lives to the God who created us, we win!

  • Chris Tomlin says that raising a white flag usually means you're defeated, and you've now been captured.
  • He says he loves how the kingdom of God is so upside down.
  • That by raising a white flag we're not saying we're defeated, we're saying we've won.
  • We're saying that it's best to be captured by a God of Love.

  • This song was sung as 27,000 white flags were placed outside the Georgia dome at the end of the 2012 Passion conference.
  • The flags were made in India, by people who had been brought out of human trafficking and slavery.  Each flag represented 1000 people - 27 million total - who are still in slavery around the world.
  • The attendees to the conference proclaimed how having a heart that's captive to Christ ultimately results in a heart that's made free.
  • And they made their commitment to help those who are held captive in this world to become free in Christ.

    Your Own Experiences

What do you constantly battle?  Weight issues, control issues, self-esteem or significance issues? When will you realize that you just can't win against these thoughts?  Or if you have defeated these thoughts, talk about how it was only possible by turning every thought captive to God.

Talk about freedom in surrender.  How you can surrender something like drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, sugar, and how once you surrender it, you ultimately become free.

When one goes into detox, they usually do it in a safe house.  Mention that God is a safe house - a place of refuge and strength - that you can go to when you need to detox from the world.   Encourage the listener to surrender to His safety to get away from what holds them captive.
