Taking It Deeper

Every secret, every shame

Every fear, every pain

Live inside the dark

But that's not who we are

We are children of the day

So wake up sleeper, lift your head

We were meant for more than this

Fight the shadows conquer death

Make the most of the time we have left

We are the light of the world

We are the city on a hill

We are the light of the world

We gotta, we gotta, we gotta let the light shine

We are the light of the world

We are the city on a hill

We are the light of the world

We gotta, we gotta, we gotta let the light shine

Let the light shine, let the light shine

We are called to the spread the news

Tell the world the simple truth

Jesus came to save, there's freedom in His Name

So let His love break through

We are the light, We are the light, We are the light

So let your light shine brighter

We are the light, We are the light, We are the light

You are the light, You are the light, You are the light

We will lift You higher

Shine, Shine, Shine

  • Here are some great quotes from the late evangelist Dwight L. Moody that go along with this song:
  • “We are told to let our light shine, and if it does, we won’t need to tell anybody it does.   Lighthouses don’t fire cannon to call attention to their shining - they just shine.”
  • “Where one man reads the Bible, a hundred read you and me.”
  • “Character is what you are in the dark.”
  • “A man ought to live so that everybody knows he is a Christian...and most of all, his family ought to know.”

  • Just remember - Light makes fearsome things scatter.
  • If something has you fearful today, then Jesus is the light you need.
  • and maybe you can also shine Jesus’ light to someone who needs it.

  • James Thurber said “There are two kinds of light - the glow that illumines, and the glare that obscures.”
  • Jesus is both kinds.
  • His light gives a glow that adds color when our lives seem drab.
  • And when we’re in deep dark trouble, His light blocks out that which makes us afraid.

  • There’s a great line in this (that) song that says: “Fight the shadows, conquer death”
  • It’s good to know that we can do battle using the light of Jesus.
  • It’s more powerful than a lightsaber that’s for sure.

    Scripture References

    John 1:4-5

In him was life,   and that life was the light of men.   The light shines in the darkness,   but the darkness has not understood   it.

    Psalms 36:9

For with you is the fountain of life;   in your light   we see light.

    Luke 11:33-35

No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead he puts it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.   Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are good, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are bad, your body also is full of darkness.   See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness.

    Isaiah 9:2 and Matthew 4:6

the people living in darkness   have seen a great light;   on those living in the land of the shadow of death   a light has dawned.”

    2 Corinthians 4:6

For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,”   made his light shine in our hearts   to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

    Psalms 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

    Matthew 5:14-15

You are the light of the world.   A city on a hill cannot be hidden.   Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

    Your Own Experiences

Who in your life has been a light shining for Jesus?   Talk about that person and how appealing they were (or are).

Talk about coming into a room at night and turning on a light and seeing a bug.   Do you have a brief flash of fear? Does the light make them scatter?   Encourage the listener that the light of Jesus in them has the power to scatter people’s fears, and that’s why we shouldn't be afraid to share that light.

Talk about a time you got to share the light of Jesus.   Maybe with your kids.   What did they say?
