Taking It Deeper

I've been here before, now here I am again
Standing at the door, praying You'll let me back in
To label me a prodigal would be
Only scratching the surface of who I've been known to be
Turn me around pick me up
Undo what I've become
Bring me back to the place
Of forgiveness and grace
I need You, need Your help
I can't do this myself
You're the only one who can undo
What I've become
I focused on the score, but I could never win
Trying to ignore, a life of hiding my sin
To label me a hypocrite would be
Only scratching the surface of who I've been known to be
(Repeat Chorus)
Make every step lead me back to
The sovereign way that You
(Repeat Chorus)

  • Our lives can be like ugly sweaters.
  • We get stuck in patterns we don’t like.   Patterns that end up covering us. Overwhelming us.
  • All we need is one thread sticking out, so that we can start to pull on it.
  • From that one starting point, we can get those patterns to unravel.
  • This song is an ugly sweater unraveler.

  • If someone you knew embezzled $15,000 from their employer last year, would it be OK to tell them to only embezzle $10,000 this year, and $5,000 the next - all because they were in the process of being “converted?”
  • That wouldn’t be right, would it?
  • True repentance is an immediate stopping of wrong behavior, but it’s more than that.   It’s an immediate undoing.
  • It’s both you undoing your misdeeds, (in this case, paying back the money) and God undoing the mark against you for the misdeeds.
  • It’s because He gives you grace and mercy for your wrongdoing that you have an emotional abundance of gratitude.   That gives you the power to stop the wrongdoing.

  • Have you ever played Monopoly and have drawn a Community Chest card that allows you to pick up your top hat and move directly to Go?
  • This song is like that.   You get to move forward - back to the beginning!
  • Back to the place of forgiveness and grace.
  • A life with God is like a bizarre Monopoly game where you have an endless stack of “proceed directly to Go” cards.

    Scripture References

    Ezekiel 18:30-32

“Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each one according to his ways, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall.   Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, O house of Israel?   For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent and live!"

    2 Peter 3:9

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

    Galatians 2:20

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

    Your Own Experiences

Talk about a time you returned a defective item and got a new one.   Compare that to this song and how God will undo defective hearts and replace them with new ones.

Is there something in your life that can be defined as a “starting point” right now?   Talk about it and remind your audience that God’s grace is something that allows for continual starting points.

Talk about having a personal trainer or an exercise buddy or a coach who has helped you undo bad habits.   Compare that concept to this song.
