Taking It Deeper

Who breaks the power of sin and darkness
Whose love is mighty and so much stronger
The King of glory, the King above all Kings
Who shakes the whole earth with holy thunder
Leaves us breathless in awe and wonder
The King of glory, the King above all Kings
This is amazing grace
This is unfailing love
That You would take my place
That You would bear my cross
You laid down Your life
That I would be set free
Jesus I sing for all that You’ve done for me
Who brings our chaos back into order
Who makes the orphan a son and daughter
The King of glory, the King of glory
Who rules the nations with truth and justice
Shines like the sun in all of its brilliance
The king of glory, the King above all Kings
Worthy is the lamb who was slain
Worthy is the King who conquered the grave

  • The airline gate agent told the Allen’s that she had good and bad news.
  • The bad news was that the flight was overbooked and they were on standby.
  • The good news was that she had just found two seats for them in first class.
  • Our good news is that we’ve all been bumped up to first class.
  • We have something we don’t deserve and that we haven’t paid for.

  • Life gives us scars. Physical ones, emotional ones, sometimes they come with the job, or even worse, from someone we love.
  • There is one who understands.  We often refer to Him as “the one with nail-scarred hands.”
  • You have a Savior who has gone through pain and has the scars to prove it.
  • And He did it so that He could heal the scars that you have.

  • Think about an egg.
  • Ultimately the outer shell is discarded for the new life inside.
  • An egg is just a temporary thing, paving the way for something better.
  • Think about God’s grace in the same way.  Once you accept Jesus you have this shell that grows around you.
  • One that protects you in this life until it’s time to discard it for your life in heaven.

  • I heard a Pastor describe grace this way.  He said “grace is the boat that tows you.”
  • Faith is the rope you hold onto.
  • God’s grace has the power to lead you up out of the depths.  It will always come to your rescue.
  • But you gotta hang on to it.

  • There was one time that I plugged in a mixer and it started smoking and sparking.  Guess what I did?
  • I unplugged it.
  • It reminds me of the thought behind this song.  The first line says “who breaks the power of sin and darkness.”
  • That’s just like us when we have to unplug a smoking sparking appliance.
  • God can break the stuff that is malfunctioning in our lives.
  • When we truly latch on to the grace that says “I love you no matter what you do or what you’ve done” we are strengthened to change.
  • By His grace He gives us the ability to unplug from what has power over us.

  • Have you ever had someone surprise you with a gift card?
  • What do we usually say?  “Awww...you shouldn’t have!”
  • To which the giver says “I know, but I wanted to.”
  • That’s kind of like the words to this song.  It’s you and I being amazed at the extravagant, amazing gift that God has given us.  It’s the gift of laying down His life, so that we can be free from sin that wants to trap us.

  • Have you ever seen a TV show where a live animal has been trapped in a cage?
  • Once they let him loose, he still has feelings of fear toward the one letting him go.
  • You and I are that way too.  God wants to free us from the sin that keeps us bound up in life
  • But we’re often still afraid of trusting the one who can set us free.

    Scripture References

    Ephesians 2:8

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--

    Jeremiah 31:2-3

This is what the Lord says: "The people who survive the sword will find favor in the wilderness; I will come to give rest to Israel."

The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: "I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.

    Hebrews 4:16

Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

    2 Corinthians 12:8-9

Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.  But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.

    Your Own Experiences

Describe a time when you took somebody’s place in line.  Talk about how they transferred their position onto you.  Point out that it’s what Jesus did for us on the cross.  We we’re standing in a line leading to spiritual death, and He switched places with us, and put us in His line - one that leads to spiritual life.   That’s a picture of grace and why it’s so amazing.

Think about how someone offered to help you in a time of need.  Maybe they watched your kids when you had to take a loved one to the emergency room.  Perhaps someone who provided meals when you were sick.  Talk about how you “sang that person’s praises.”   Point our that this song does just that.  The last line of the chorus is “Jesus, I sing for all that you’ve done for me.”

Talk about how hard it is for us to show grace to someone who has wronged us (road rage, maybe?).  Contrast that to how amazing it is that God gives us grace even after multiple times of ignoring Him, dismissing Him, treating Him as unworthy, etc.
