Taking It Deeper

Yours will be the only Name that matters to me
The only One Whose favor I seek
The only Name that matters to me
Yours will be
The friendship and affection I need
To feel my Father smiling on me
The only Name that matters to me
Yours is the Name the Name that has saved me
Mercy and grace the power that forgave me
And Your love is all I've ever needed
When I wake up in the Land of Glory
And with the saints I will tell my story
There will be one Name that I proclaim
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, just that Name

Have you ever had that “sixth sense” feeling when the phone rings?   That feeling that something is wrong?   I had that happen to me recently when my cell phone rang, and I saw that it was my wife.

When I picked up, all I could hear on the other side of the line was that she was at Lowe’s, and she had cut her hand.   “It’s deep...   I think I’m going to need stitches” she said frantically through painful tears.   “Come get me!”

After a mad dash through the neighborhood, and 5 stitches later, I thought about that when I heard this song.   All of us have one name that we call when we’re in need.   Someone who will rush to get us and rescue us in trouble.

This song is about reminding us of a name we can always call upon, whether or not we feel that something is wrong.   In fact, calling on Jesus even when things are fine is a sign of a deeper relationship.   It means that you’re calling just because you want to spend time with Him.

This is a song about getting to that place, and it’s also about another place we’re going - heaven - and how we’ll be using that name in both places.

  • This song talks about waking up in the land of glory.  Jesus talks about that in John 17: 24 where He is praying to His Father, saying:
  • “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.
  • Right before that, though, verse 22 has Jesus saying that He has given us that glory now, so that we will be in unity.
  • So if you’re discouraged today, find someone else who believes in Jesus, and ask for prayer.
  • Tell them you don’t want to wait to wake up in the land of glory, that instead, you need a little bit of glory right now to pick you up.
  • And If you don’t have anyone, we can pray for you.

  • Remember when you were dating and you’d imagine what your name would be if you married that person?
  • Maybe you remember when you were trying to find a name for your baby.
  • There are times in life like that when we focus on names.
  • That’s what this (that) song’s about.  It’s about focusing on a name that will change your life.

  • There are people who will legally change their name  - perhaps to another family name.
  • It’s often because their former last name gives them too many painful reminders of a cruel father.
  • This (That) song lets us know that there is a name we can focus on that will give you the friendship and affection you need to feel a heavenly Father smiling on you.

  • Remember playing with a laser pointer? - Remember how it shines a really focused beam of light?
  • This song reminds me of that.
  • It’s reminding me that I need to intensely focus on a particular someone.   That would be Jesus.

  • Salespeople are always looking for prospects.
  • They can never have enough names on their list.
  • This (That) song is about the opposite.
  • It’s about having one name that is always enough.

  • There are times that just sitting in a chair can be stressful.
  • The dentist’s chair comes to mind.
  • However, just sitting and thinking about all you have to do can get you stressed out.
  • It’s at that time that you just need to lean back, close your eyes, and say Jesus’ name.
  • You may have to do that a hundred times a day.   It’s OK.

  • Long ago, in the black and white TV days, Groucho Marx had a quiz show called “You Bet Your Life”
  • Each show had a secret word.   If a contestant said it, they’d get $100 bucks.
  • This song is about a word that isn’t secret, and that is worth infinitely more.

    Scripture References

    Acts 4:12

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”

    Phillippians 2:9-11

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

    John 14:6

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

    Your Own Experiences

Talk about the last time you made a reservation.   Talk about how you had to give your name.   Then compare that to the line in the song that says:   “When I wake up in the Land of Glory, And with the saints I will tell my story.   There will be one Name that I proclaim.”   The point is that it is the name of Jesus that you will use for your reservation in Heaven.

Talk about when your child first said “Mama” or “Dada.”   How did that make you feel?   Jesus feels the same way.   He loves it when His name is the first one on our lips in time of trouble.

Talk about having to use another’s name.   Like signing up for something and using a friend’s name as a referral to get a discount.   Compare that to how Jesus wants you to use His name.   Any time you are in trouble, He’s wants you to call on Him first.
