Taking It Deeper

My life before You
I was a flame burning down
I was burning out
But You knew me better
For You there was never a doubt
Not since You gave me life

Something was different
I knew it the instant
You put the light in me

The spark
The shot to the heart
You are the hope that leads me
Out of the dark
You let Your love shine down
So that the world can see
You put the light in me

The light, You put the light in me
The light, You put the light in me
The light, You put the light in me
The light, You put the light in me

You are the Maker
You tell the sun when to rise
I'm just a house on a hill
But You make me brighter
Than all the stars in the sky
Keep me from growing dim‘Cause in Your perfection
I'm just a reflection
So pull me closer to YouI'll catch like a fire
And I'll hold You higher‘Cause You put the light in meI'll raise it high, I'll let it show
From the roof tops down to the streets below
In day and night, You will be known
And all will see
You put the light in me

  •    Remember that scene from Beauty and the Beast when the beast turns back into the prince?
  •   Remember how the light comes from within and shoots out his fingers?
  •   That’s us!
  •   When we accept and know Jesus, His light shines from within us.
  •   It makes a dark world a little brighter
  •   and it transforms us into princes (and princesses!)

  •   Isn’t it great that God didn’t naturally wire us to be nocturnal?
  •   We’re meant to be awake when it’s light outside.
  •   We’re meant to live in the light.
  •   And, even more, we’re meant to live with God’s light in us!

  •   I read in an interview that if Brandon Heath could have any superpower in the world, he’d want to be able to fly.
  •   Except in this (that) song he reminds us that we all have a super power.
  •   The ability to shine God’s light into a dark world.

    Scripture References

    Matthew 5:14-16

“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.

Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

    2 Samuel 22:29

You are my lamp, O Lord; the Lord turns my darkness into light.

    1 John 1:5-7

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.

If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

    Psalm 56:13

For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.

This goes along with the line in the song that says:   “Cause in Your perfection
I'm just a reflection,   so pull me closer to You.”

    1 Corinthians 13:12

Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

    Psalm 112:4

Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for the gracious and compassionate and righteous man.

    Your Own Experiences

Who do you know that has “bright eyes?”   Someone who just looks directly at you with a big smile on her face, who just beams with love?   Who is that person and would you want to be like her?   Why or why not?

During pumpkin carving have you ever told your kids about how God cleans up the mess inside us, puts a joyful face on us, and then places His light inside of us?   That’s a perfect story to go along with this song.

Describe one instance where you knew your life was different once He put His light in you.
