Taking It Deeper

You fought but you were just too weak
So you lost all the things you try to keep
Now you're on your knees
You're on your knees
But wait everything can change
In a moments' time
You don't have to be afraid,
'Cause fear is just a lie
Open up your eyes
And He'll break open the skies to save
Those who cry out his name
The one the wind and waves obey
Is strong enough to save you
Look now is not too late
Lift up your head
Let the rain fall on your face
You're not far from grace
You're not too far from grace
(Chorus X2)
I know the weight of this world can take you down like gravity
I know the current of yourself can take you out, out to sea
But hold on
Hold on

  • I heard this story about a child who was praying the alphabet.
  • When his Mom asked him why he was doing that, he said.
  • “I don’t know what to pray, so I just pray the letters and let God put them together”
  • We often are afraid to share our faith with others.
  • All we need to do is share Jesus’ love and compassion with others, and let His Spirit put it all together for them.

  • Here’s what Mike Donehey of Tenth Avenue North has to say about this song:
  • We feel this pressure when we talk about Jesus.   Because some people don’t like us talking about Him.
  • When we get those adverse reactions we say “ooh maybe I better change what I’m saying.”
  • It’s because we believe that God needs us.
  • The good news is that He doesn’t.
  • We think God needs us to complete him, but He’s already complete.
  • Acts 17:25 says “And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else.
  • God’s not served by our hands - So other’s salvation is not contingent upon us.
  • It’s up to God to save.
  • The saving is always supernatural.
  • And God is always strong enough to save even the most wretched.
  • Start by describing how nervous we get when we talk about our faith to a non-believer, like maybe a family member.
  • Mention that we don’t have to be afraid, because “It’s God who does the saving, and He’s strong enough to save anyone you may be afraid to talk to.”
  • Finish with “He just needs you to be real with them, and let them see your story.”

  • We worry about our loved ones that don’t know about Jesus Christ.
  • But as this (that) song points out, the one whom the wind and waves obey, is strong enough to save.
  • Controlling wind and waves is a pretty supernatural thing.
  • All we have to do is let our lives be the message - through loving and serving.
  • And let God do the supernatural.
  • Because every time a heart is changed, it is a supernatural thing.

  • If it’s a rainy day, you can tie into the chorus of this song to talk about how God will open up the skies to reach each and every single person.

    Scripture References

    Romans 8:16

The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

    1 Corinthians 12:6

There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.

    John 16:7b - 8

Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:

    John 16:15

All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.

    Acts 8: 29-35

The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.”

Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked.

“How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.

The eunuch was reading this passage of Scripture: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before the shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.”

The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.

    1 Corinthians 2: 9-11

However, as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him” –

but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.   For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God

    1 Corinthians 2:13-14

This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.

The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

    Ephesians 2:8-9

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith –and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God–   not by works, so that no one can boast.

    Acts 17:25

And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else.

    Your Own Experiences

Talk about trying to convince someone to accept Christ and how awkward it is.   Compare that to someone who just naturally asks   “why are you different” and how much easier it is to naturally share your faith when that happens.

Talk about why you think you’re more open to accept Christ’s help when things are going wrong, than when everything is hunky dory?   Then tie it into the first verse of this song.

Talk about how you have some winds and waves battering your life now, and how you trust that He is strong enough to take care of them.
