Taking It Deeper

I've had all these plans piled up sky high
A thousand dreams on hold
And I don't know why, I
Got a front row seat
To the longest wait
And I just can’t see
Past the things I pray
But when I fix my eyes on all that You are
Then every doubt I feel
Deep in my heart
Grows strangely dim
All my worries fade
And fall to the ground
Cuz when I seek Your face
And don’t look around
Any place I’m in
Grows strangely dim
Sometimes where I stand
On this narrow road
Is in a raging storm
Or a valley low
But oh
(Repeat Chorus)
I don't know I don't know
What tomorrow may hold
But I know but I know
That You're holding it all
So no matter what may come
I’m gonna fix my eyes on all that You are
Til every doubt I feel
Deep in my heart
Grows strangely dim
Let all my worries fade
And fall to the ground
I’m gonna seek Your face
And not look around
Til place I’m in
Grows strangely dim

  •  Talk about your use of Instagram.   Tell the listeners that following Jesus is like instagramming.   It’s focusing on the most important, and letting the background blur.

  • Ask your listeners if they know how many people give up their New Year’s fitness goal?
  • The answer is 73%
  • Tell them that there is a goal that we can meet 100%.   It’s setting our sights on Jesus.
  • That one goal can help all others be met.

  • The verse you can use in or out of this song is Matthew 6:34
  • “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
  • Invite the listeners to focus on Jesus today, and not the perceived troubles of tomorrow.

  • Ask your listeners if they’ve ever held on to a suitcase for so long that their hand froze.
  • When we focus on things we’re afraid of losing, it can freeze us.   Our lives can be at a standstill around them
  • Focusing on Jesus however, thaws us out.   He enables us to let go. Romans 8:2 says:   through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

  • It’s like a dad with twin toddlers who’s playing with them both.
  • When one is getting thrown in the air, the other has to wait.
  • This (that) song is encouragement for the one who has to wait.
  • Dad will throw you in the air again.
  • Just keep focusing on Him.

  • Are you doing all the right things but not seeing the results you’d like?
  • This (That) song reminds you not to focus on results.
  • But instead focus on the one who can bring results.
  • I know it’s hard for us to do.
  • But you can worry for years about results that God can bring about in a minute.

  • Do you ever feel like God has you sidelined, and all the other team members are getting the glory?
  • Sometimes He puts us on the sides to teach us we need to focus on the overall goal.
  • And the goal is that He is the one who should get the glory.

  • Here’s where you first heard the words “strangely dim,” it’s from the hymn “Turn your eyes upon Jesus”
  • The rest goes:   “Look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glorious grace.”

  • Have you ever taken a picture with an expensive camera and you had to turn the lens so that what you took a picture of remained sharp?
  • That’s what this (that) song is about.
  • It reminds us that our subject is God.
  • Are you keeping a laser focus on Him as you move through life?

    Scripture References

    Hebrews 12:1-2

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2  fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

    Psalm 119:36-37

Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain.

Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word

    Psalm 27:4-5

One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.

For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle and set me high upon a rock.

    Your Own Experiences

There was a time in your life when you had to wait what seemed like an eternity for something.   What was it and how did you get through it?

A line in the chorus says “when I seek your face, and don’t look around.”   What is something in your life that is distracting you from focusing on God?

A line in the song says “you’re holding it all.”   However, there is probably something that you’re holding on to that you should let God have.   What is it?   Would life be less stressful if you gave it over to Him, and you didn’t have to worry about it?
