Taking It Deeper

Lyrics

Caught a glimpse of Your splendor

In the corner of my eye

The most beautiful thing I've ever seen

And it was like a flash of lightning

Reflected off the sky

And I know I'll never be the same

Show me Your glory

Send down Your presence

I want to see Your face

Show me Your glory

Majesty shines about You

I can't go on without You, Lord

When I climb down the mountain

And get back to my life

I won't settle for ordinary things

I'm gonna follow You forever

And for all of my days

I won't rest 'til I see You again

Show me Your glory

Show me Your glory

I can't live without You

TID-bits

  • Do you remember the story of Medusa in Greek Mythology?  She was a serpent-headed creature, and if you barely looked at her you were immediately turned to stone!
  • I remember when I was a kid, I was told to not look at a solar eclipse because it would blind me.
  • My imagination gave the eclipse a Medusa like power.  I thought that a passing glance would strike me blind.  Immediately, and with no change!
  • There is only one thing that truly has that power, and that is the glory of God.
  • When a passing encounter of God brushes your life - for instance when He answers a prayer immediately in a way that you could never orchestrate, it changes you.  You find out His reality.  You feel extremely alive.
  • Encounters with God’s glory have an “opposite Medusa effect.”  They turn hearts that are stony cold into hearts that are fully alive!

  • Why is Bible study so important?
  • It’s because there is a difference between just reading the Bible, and exploring the nuances hidden deeper inside the history and background.
  • You see the inner workings of God through the lives, the stories, even through the long lists of geneologies and do’s and dont’s in Numbers.
  • Bible study is the difference between just seeing a loved one’s face, and really soaking in every beautiful created contour.
  • If you really want to see God’s glory then pick a verse and dive in deep.  Google and go!

  • If you are a Christian, you are Clark Kent.
  • You carefully cultivate this secret identity on the outside.  An identity that hides the glory of God on the inside.
  • John 17:22-23 is a passage where Jesus is speaking about us, and He says: The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one,  I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.
  • God’s glory lives inside of you, given to you by Jesus.  Ask Him to reveal it, and watch the world be changed as we shed our Clark Kent meekness.

    Scripture References

    Exodus 24:15-18

Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain.  The glory of the Lord dwelt on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud.  Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel.  Moses entered the cloud and went up on the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

    Psalm 19:1

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

    John 1:14

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

    Your Own Experiences

What is the most beautiful thing that God has ever revealed to you?

    —————————————

Describe a way that He recently showed you His glory - a sunrise or sunset perhaps?  A new life coming into the world?  Maybe just a beautiful friendship that you share with someone.  Point out that He will show us something that reflects His glory everyday.  We just have to open our eyes to it.

The first verse mentions that His splendor was “like a flash of lightning reflected off the sky” and because of that, the singer will never be the same.  Talk about a time that a flash of lightning hit a little too close to home.  I bet if it were yesterday or years ago, you still remember it.  Suggest to the listeners that God is still using mighty things like lightning, or the sky at morning or night to remind us that His glory is not to be ignored.
