Taking It Deeper

I see the work of Your Hands
Galaxies spin in a Heavenly dance oh God
All that You are is so overwhelming
I hear the sound of Your Voice
All at once it’s a gentle and thundering noise oh God
All that You are is so overwhelming
I delight myself in You
Captivated by Your beauty
I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You
God, I run into Your arms
Unashamed because of mercy
I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You
I know the power of Your Cross
Forgiven and free forever You’ll be my God
All that You’ve done is so overwhelming
I delight myself in You
In the Glory of Your Presence
I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You
God, I run into Your arms
Unashamed because of mercy
I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You
You are Beautiful, You are Beautiful
Oh God, there is no one more Beautiful
You are Beautiful, God you are the most Beautiful
You are Wonderful, You are Wonderful
Oh God, there is no one more Wonderful
You are Wonderful, God You are the most Wonderful
You are Glorious, You are Glorious
Oh God, there is no one more Glorious
You are Glorious, God you are the most Glorious

  • You and I both experience “overwhelming” on a daily basis.
  • We’re overwhelmed by life - by the to do list, grocery list, errands list, and by our calendars.
  • I’m going to say something a little strange though - maybe it’s a good thing to be overwhelmed.
  • It all depends on what you’re overwhelmed by.
  • This song gives you an opportunity to be overwhelmed by the one who can help you through all the other overwhelming stuff.

  • Remember a time that you ran to your mom or dad during a thunderstorm?  Maybe it was in the middle of the night and you crawled under their covers.
  • You weren’t ashamed to go to them, you didn’t necessarily knock first, you were simply scared and you went to the source of comfort.
  • When this (that) song says, “God I run into your arms, unashamed because of mercy,” it’s talking about a child in a midnight thunderstorm.  It’s describing you in your dark moments.
  • It’s saying that going to God should never be intimidating.  Instead, He always welcomes you coming to Him.

  • Do you know what happens when you flood a lawn mower?  There’s too much gas in the carburetor and it messes up the fuel/air mixture - so it won’t start.
  • Do you have a day like that today?  One where you try to get going, but your brain is just flooded with everything you have going on that you just can’t seem to get started?
  • Do you know what the remedy for a flooded engine is?  It’s letting it sit and drain for a bit.
  • Try that.  Try sitting.  Try letting all your stuff drain out of your mind for 15 (or even 5) minutes, and instead be filled with thoughts of God’s beauty, and mercy, and power.
  • Focus on those things to get you started.

  • Notice that this (that) song says “All that you ARE is overwhelming.  Not “all that you DO is overwhelming.”
  • That’s an important point.  We should be more impressed with who God is, and not just the things He does.
  • After all, that’s how He feels about you.  He loves you for who you are, not what you do.

    Scripture References

    Psalm 8:4

what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?

    1 John 2:28

And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.

    Ecclesiastes 3:11

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.

    Your Own Experiences

Describe your screen saver on your computer.  Is it a pretty picture?  Is it one of your family?  Is it something that is beautiful to you?   Talk about how a screen saver pops up when work is paused.  Then mention how cool it would be if we could actually have a picture of God that we could regularly look at.   Point out that our spirits need to pause occasionally and praise His beauty.

What was the last thing that had you “captivated?”  Was it some video on the internet?  A movie?  A book?  Point out that it was made by an author, and an authors job is to try and captivate you - to hold your attention.  Talk about how God, as the ultimate creator, is trying to captivate you through the beauty He’s created in the stars, in the earth, and in you.

Describe a time that you were fascinated by a skilled craftsman or musician.  Then remind the listener that this song is describing the same thing.
