Taking It Deeper

Lyrics

Staring at a stop sign
Watching people drive by
T Mac on the radio
Got so much on your mind
Nothing's really going right
Looking for a ray of hope

Whatever it is you may be going through
I know He's not gonna let it get the best of you

You're an overcomer
Stay in the fight til the final round
You're not going under
Cause God is holding you right now
You might be down for a moment
Feeling like it's hopeless
That's when He reminds You
That you're an overcomer
You're an overcomer
Everybody's been down
Hit the bottom, hit the ground
Oh, you're not alone
Just take a breath, don't forget
Hang on to His promises
He wants You to know
The same Man, the Great I am
The one who overcame death
Is living inside of You
So just hold tight, fix your eyes
On the one who holds your life
There's nothing He can't do
He's telling You

TID-bits

  • Acts 14:22 says "...continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.
  • The Apostle Paul had been beaten up for his faith.  The crowd threw stones at him, and almost killed him.  However, with help, he got back up and went to another town and continued preaching there.
  • The words of Acts 14:22 were what they used to encourage the church.
  • Can you imagine the scene?  Paul - beaten up, swollen, bruised, limping saying "through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God."
  • I give you this verse today to help you with whatever has you feeling beaten.
  • With God's help you can overcome it.

-----------------------------

  • You can either focus on the stuff that's holding you down
  • Or you can focus on God who's holding you up

-----------------------------

  • Does life have you a little nervous, a little worried, a little sweaty?
  • Just remember that His inspiration will overcome your perspiration.
  • That...and a good deodorant.

-----------------------------

  • If the stress of life is making you feel like a basket case
  • It's good to go ahead and put all your eggs in God's basket.
  • It'll keep you from cracking.

-----------------------------

  • Sometimes I get a little on edge, and this (that) song helps pull me back to solid ground.

This is a post that Mandisa shared that can go along with this song:

I had a sweet time w/ God today. I'm in a discipleship group and we're working through my pastor Dave Buehring's discipleship workbook "A Discipleship Journey". In my prayer time after today's lesson on sin, the cross, and repentance I feel like God gave me a really cool illustration I want to share with you.

Ya know how people who have had an organ transplant (like a heart, lung, etc.) feel compelled to live their lives in a certain way because they've been given a new lease on life? That's how God wants us to live. I feel like I have often taken God's grace and forgiveness for granted. This freedom I have came at a huge cost to Jesus. I want to live my life in such a way that honors His death which gave me a new life. Amen?

  • Today before breakfast you'll get up, try to have a quiet time, try to exercise, feed the dog, start a load of laundry, print off and fill out a form for the camp your kid wants to go to, check the bank to see if you have the cash to write the check for the camp your kid wants to go to, then holler at him that he won't go anywhere unless he gets his room clean. Then you'll look at e-mails and see that the people haven't signed up for the party you're organizing for your Sunday School class, so you'll send another e-mail out, then start a to do list for the supplies you need for the party, on top of figuring out which errands need to be run first so that you can get all the stuff for all the other to-do lists that you have going.
  • ...then maybe you'll get some breakfast.
  • Is it any wonder that it sometimes seems like your life is a tangled web of confusion?  And that you find yourself with a blank look, just staring at stop signs like this song says...?

-----------------------------

  • We constantly multi-task.
  • And that constant input puts us at constant states of sensory overload.
  • Which dulls your mind.
  • I think God knew we would have a tendency to keep that constant pace.
  • Which is why He suggests the quiet time with Him, and resting one day out of seven.
  • It's really the only way we'll overcome this world.

-----------------------------

  • When I was a kid, Dad would push me in a swing.
  • And it gave me the momentum to go up really high.
  • This (That) song is like that.  To overcome, and to fly high, you often need a push from Dad.

    Scripture References

    Deuteronomy 20:4
For the LORD your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory."

    -----------------------------

    John 16:33
"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

    -----------------------------

    Ephesians 4:22-24
You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

    Your Own Experiences

What are some things you think God gives to people to help them overcome the stress in their lives?  I think you can start with these:  "Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Understanding."  Remind the listener that the more they spend time with God, the more they will grow in these things which will help them overcome.

    -----------------------------

Share a story of a teacher who helped you overcome a tough subject, or a coach that helped you overcome a weakness, or a doctor who helped you overcome a disease.  Give thanks that there are folks like that who God provides in your life.

    -----------------------------

There are spiritual issues we all face - like significance and acceptance.  How has God helped you overcome those?  Or...do you need help overcoming them?  Talk about how you're asking Him to help you.
