Taking It Deeper

You were reaching through the storm
walking on the water
even when I could not see
in the middle of it all
when I thought You were a thousand miles away
not for a moment did You forsake me
not for a moment did You forsake me
after all You are constant
after all You are only good
after all You are sovereign
not for a moment will You forsake me
not for a moment will You forsake me
You were singing in the dark
whispering Your promise
even when I could not hear
I was held in Your arms
carried for a thousand miles to show
Not for a moment did You forsake me
and every step every breath you are there
every tear every cry every prayer
in my heart at my worst
when my world falls down
not for a moment will You forsake me
even in the dark
even when it's hard
you will never leave me
after all
Not for a moment will You forsake me

You can always use Joshua 1:5   “He will never leave you, He will never forsake you” around this song, but to go deeper, think about this as a song of commitment.

When one is truly committed to a relationship, one is saying that they will stick their neck out for you.   They will be there pulling for you, checking on you, through all times - good and bad.   Here’s a way you can demonstrate that for your listeners:

Ask them to think about the car they’re riding in.   That car started out as pieces of metal. Someone (or some thing, probably a robot) started welding those pieces together to form the shape of that car.   When they were welded, the metal bonds melted together, making it stronger than it was before.   Even in an accident the rest of the car will break, but the welded bonds will hold.

In the same way, when we allow Jesus to melt deep down into our heart and soul, our entire life becomes stronger.   He cannot leave us.   You are welded together to the only good and constant one of the universe.   You may encounter something that will break you occasionally, but your bond with Him will hold.

...And fortunately it’s a bond that is always committed to help you build again.

  • “Reaching” is something we do in the middle of the night.
  • Say we get a midnight phone call... with our eyes pretty much shut we reach out looking for the receiver.
  • We keep reaching until we find it.
  • This first verse talks about God reaching for us in our darkness.
  • His hand is there.   It’s up to us to keep reaching out to find Him.
  • Especially if you’re dealing with a “phone call in the middle of the night” type issue.
  • (OPTIONAL LAST LINE) By the way, you can reach out to us too.   Always know that we are here to pray for you.

  • There’s a verse in this (that) song that says “when I thought you were a thousand miles away.”
  • It reminds me of the stories you see on TV where a wife is video chatting with her serviceman husband over in Afghanistan or somewhere far away.
  • When in reality, he’s in the next room.
  • That IS our reality when it comes to God.
  • Get ready to be delighted when he shows up.

  • What’s that they say?   “Hindsight is always 20/20”
  • This is a “hindsight” song.
  • The lyrics are from the perspective of coming out of a storm.
  • But it will help you weather the storm you’re going through now...

    Your Own Experiences

Try to remember a recent life event where you didn’t know what the outcome was going to be.   Now, after it’s all over, share how you knew that God was working through it.

What is something in your life that is constant?   Troubles?   The car breaking down whenever you get a little extra money?   Laundry?   Remind the listeners that God is constant and He’s a positive constant for when we want to focus on the negative constants.

The bridge of this song says “every step, every breath, you are there.”   Invite the listeners to listen for that, and tell them that when you are tempted to focus on your problems today you are instead going to take a breath and exhale the words “you are there.”

  1. Warning… I am ripping off my sister. :) Psalms 56 3-4 says “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
David was on the run from King Saul. Yet in the midst of intense, frightening hardship, he submitted himself to the Lord’s protection. He didn’t deny the reality of what was happening to him, but he found reason to be grateful even for his sorrows. He knew that God would not forsake him.
