Taking It Deeper

Well everybody's got a story to tell
And everybody's got a wound to be healed
I want to believe there's beauty here
So, I guess you're tired of holding on
I can't let go, I can't move on
I want to believe there's meaning here
How many times have you heard me cry out
"God please take this"?
How many times have you given me strength to
Just keep breathing?
Oh I need you
God, I need you now.
Standing on a road I didn't plan
Wondering how I got to where I am
I'm trying to hear that still small voice
I'm trying to hear above the noise
Though I walk, though I walk through the shadows
And I, I am so afraid
Please stay, please stay right beside me
With every single step I take
How many times have you heard me cry out?
And how many times have you given me strength?
I need you now
I need you now

It’s hard to persevere in hardships.   It’s hard to face God’s timetable, especially in this day and age where we want everything resolved NOW!   The truth is that God may not resolve your struggles when you want Him to, but He will help you persevere.   He will strengthen you as you walk through them.

And even though your struggles may not get resolved, it doesn’t mean He won’t use them.   David Brainerd was a missionary to Native Americans in the early 1700’s.   For two years he saw no movement on winning converts.   He said the prospects of converting anyone was “as dark as midnight.”

He finally saw revival happen after three years - 150 natives came to know Christ - that was significant in that day and time.   Brainerd unfortunately died a few years later, at age 29.

It was after his death that things became really significant.   That was when Jonathan Edwards, whom some consider to be America’s greatest theologian, published Brainerd’s journals.   After that a man by the name of William Carey read them.   Carey is the man who ignited the modern Protestant missionary movement.   Carey’s work has resulted in millions coming to know Christ.

And what does Carey attribute to be a key source of inspiration to take up the missionary life?

The life and writings of David Brainerd.

We get discouraged worrying if our work is worthwhile.   It is, but sometimes it will only be known in God’s timetable.   That’s why we persevere.

  • Think back to 5th grade english class and the elements of a story.
  • Two things every story needs is conflict and resolution.
  • This song starts off by saying we all have a story to tell.
  • And it is especially for you if you have some sort of conflict that needs a resolution.

  • They say that our ears are tuned to hear specific things better than others,
  • Like a baby’s cry for instance.
  • Psalm 116:1 talks about how the Lord hears our cries for mercy.
  • God’s hearing is tuned to us.
  • And when you cry, He hears you.

  • This song is about the things that It’s always OK to ask God for:
  • His grace, His strength, and His presence to guide you.
  • And it’s amazing that He will always give you those things.

  • You know how when you’ve held on for something for a long time how your hand gets stuck in that position?
  • Maybe God made us that way to remind us that we should get stuck holding on to Him.

    Your Own Experiences

Sometimes you play Uno and you keep getting hit with Draw Twos and Wild Draw Fours.   Remind the listener that there are times in life when the cards will be stacked against them.   This is a “life is stacked against you” song.   However, encourage them to keep playing.   Life is made up of individual hands - some good and some bad - and God will keep you going through it.

From time to time we’ll get news that floors us - like the couple married for decades that’s getting a divorce, or the friend who’s had a horrible accident.   This is a song that holds the hand of those going through things like that.   It doesn’t necessarily provide the answers they need, but it does provide the words to their cries, and sometimes that’s all that can be given.

When was a time when you found yourself “standing on a road you didn’t plan” like this song says?  Talk about prayer and God’s Word being the map that provided you direction.
