Taking It Deeper

I give You my life

I give You my trust

You are my God

You are enough

My heart is Yours

My heart is Yours

Take it all

Take it all

My life in Your hands

I lay down my life

And take up my cross

For You are my God

Whatever the cost

For You, Jesus

All to Jesus I surrender

All to You I freely give

I will ever love and trust You

In Your presence I will live.

Remember being in love for the first time?  Remember how you beamed when you met that new boyfriend or girlfriend at the door for a date?  Those feelings start strong, but time and familiarity wear them down like water over rocks.

Rocks.  It’s the word we use to explain difficult times.  We say “the marriage is on the rocks,” or “their relationship is rocky.”  When you find yourself in this situation the only way you can climb over stony ground is by helping one another.  You do it by renewing the commitment to spend time together - to get to know each another once again.  You have to agree to work on the relationship.

Guess what? It’s no different when it comes to God.

The way you work on your relationship with Him is with the daily quiet time.

It’s committing to get back to Him, to give Him your life, your trust, and your heart. That is indeed hard work.  There is a benefit though.  When you give your life to Him on a daily (or momentary) basis, you find that in His presence you will live.  Yes, you will feel as alive as picking up that first date at the door.

How about finding a rock and writing Matthew 6:33 on it?  That verse says to “seek first His kingdom.” Keep it in your pocket as a reminder to seek Him first, especially for the times when life seems to be heading for the rocks.

  • This is actually a great birthday song!
  • It’s because your birthday is a great time to reflect on where you are in life, and where you’re going.
  • This song gives you a great direction in that regard.  If you sing it and mean it, it says you want to direct your life toward Jesus.
  • And since birthdays are an occasion to give, this song also reminds us that our lives are the best gifts that we can give to Him.

  • Remember the certain “must have” toys in years past?  Things like Tickle Me Elmo, or Cabbage Patch Dolls?  The kind of toys that parents would search all over town for, and pay whatever the cost was required to have it under the Christmas tree?
  • Those remind me a little bit of this (that) song.   It’s because it says that I will follow Jesus at “whatever the cost.”
  • What about you?  Are there things in your life that you pursue like that?
  • Part of the peace in following Jesus is that you come to the realization that there is nothing in this world that is worth pursuing more than a relationship with Him.

  • There’s giving, and there’s “freely giving.”
  • Giving is great. It’s a sacrifice, but usually not a huge one.
  • “Freely giving” however is what we say when were describing above and beyond giving.  It’s giving that continues over time.  It’s giving with a commitment.
  • It’s the parent who always puts themselves last, or the caregiver of someone with special needs, or the one who devotes hours to prayer for others every single day.
  • It’s Mother Teresa type giving.
  • There are benefits to your spirit with that type of giving.  You know you’ve made a difference when you “freely give.”
  • Is there a way that you can freely give?  Think about it with this song…

    Scripture References

    John 15:13

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends.

    Matthew 6:33
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
    Galatians 2:20
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Matthew 16:24-26Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.  For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.  For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?

    Your Own Experiences

What was the best gift you ever got?  Remember the feeling you had when you got it, and then think about Jesus.  Think about how He feels when He gets the best gift of all - your life!

Think about a time when you gave your heart away.  Was it a good or bad experience?  Think about some of the benefits of giving your heart to God.  Things like peace.  Direction.  Companionship.  Love.  Joy.  Are there any downsides to doing that?  You might be able to think of some - like giving up control - but think through that - is that really a negative?

Describe a time when you felt the presence of God.   Stop right now and try to regain that presence.  Then imagine living in it continually.  Wouldn’t that be awesome!  That's what this song talks about.
