Taking It Deeper

Everyone needs compassion
Love that’s never failing
Let mercy fall on me
Everyone needs forgiveness
The kindness of a Saviour
The hope of nations
He can move the mountains
My God is mighty to save
He is mighty to save
Author of salvation
He rose and conquered the grave
Jesus conquered the grave
So take me as You find me
All my fears and failures
Fill my life again
I give my life to follow
Everything I believe in
Now I surrender
Shine Your light and
Let the whole world see
We’re singing
For the glory of the risen King

Traffic is snarled up once again, and you’re stuck in it.   You crawl along until you get to the cause of the tie up and you see a group of firefighters having to rip open a car to extricate a trapped driver.   You pray for all of those involved, hoping that the driver is OK, and saying thanks for those doing the saving.

About once a month we’ll hear a story of a car accident, and how someone had to be rescued by first responders using “the jaws of life.”   It is a tool that can cut and pry apart metal and create openings so that trapped people can be freed from crushed vehicles.

“Mighty to Save” is a Jaws of Life song.   You may not be trapped in a car today, but you may be trapped in some negative thinking, or in an emotional state that you don’t want to be in.   Those things can keep you bound up tight.   Often it takes a powerful outside force to free us.

God’s mercy and kindness is powerful enough to do that.   When you are tempted to think of yourself in a terrible “woe is me” way, that’s when His mercy will pry its way into your heart.   Mercy is freely receiving what we don’t deserve, and the truth is we are broken people who don’t deserve His love.

But He gives it anyway!

Knowing that we can’t stop His love coming to us, even when it shouldn’t is like having the Jaws of Life rip through your pain.   Let His mercy fall on you like this song says, and let His love mightily save you today.

  •  You ever had the Doctor walk in and ask...
  • “So...How are we feeling today?”
  •   You think to yourself “I’m sure YOU are OK, Doc, but I’M not doing that great.”
  •    ...You know, He asks how WE'RE doing because he wants to identify with you,
  •   He wants to be compassionate toward you.
  •   He is probably able to cure you, but he needs to be in your shoes to understand your pain.
  •    ...you know, God is able to cure you, too.   He is mighty to save you.
  •   And He does it by showing His compassion and mercy to you.
  •   He walks in your shoes with you to heal your pain.

  •   1st Corinthians 2:9 says “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”   But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit.
  •   What is it that you need revealed to you today from God?
  •   Do you need to know that He will move mountains for you?
  •   How about needing to know that He conquered death?
  •   And if He can do that, He can conquer your pain.
  •   Let your eyes see that.   Let your ears hear that.   Let His Spirit enter that truth into your heart today.
  •   He IS Mighty to Save...

  •   Don’t you just hate the words “I don’t know?”
  •   Is God gonna help us pay this bill?   “I don’t know”
  •   Is God gonna help me get back together with my kid?   “I don’t know”
  •   We need to just scratch the word “don’t” out of there.
  •    Instead say...“I know”   God is going to help me meet my expenses.   He won’t leave me forsaken.
  •   “I KNOW” God is going to help me reconcile my relationships.   He created them, and they are just what I need.
  •   “I KNOW” that He is mighty to save, and is gonna move a mountain for me, and conquer death and everything leading up to it.

  •   It’s easy to think that this "Mighty to Save" song is about us.
  •   It’s easy to say that He is mighty to save us.
  •   That He will move mountains for us.
  •   But you gotta remember the last few lines of the song:
  •   “Shine your light and let the whole world see, we’re singing for the glory of the risen king.”
  •   The song is not about  Him  being mighty to save for us.   It’s about Him being mighty to save period    - because of who He is.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.   For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

    Your Own Experiences

Talk about a time when “it all went wrong” - like being stranded on the side of the road, and you forgot your cell phone. A time when you had to realize that He was “Mighty to Save” you.

What was the latest instance when you felt like a failure?   Did you remain that way?   Or did God say something to you, maybe through His word or through a friend that helped “fill your life again” with the purpose He has for you.

Talk about a time when compassion and mercy fell on you and you didn’t deserve it.   A story like that is a perfect lead in to this song.
