Taking It Deeper

I was lost

I was in chains

The world had a hold of me

My heart was a stone

I was covered in shame

When He came for me

I couldn't run, couldn't run from His presence

I couldn't run, couldn't run from His arms

Jesus, He loves me, He loves me, He is for me

Jesus, how can it be, He loves me, He is for me

And it was a fire

Deep in my soul

I'll never be the same

I stepped out of the dark

And into the light

When He called my name

I couldn't run, couldn't run from His presence

I couldn't run, couldn't run from His arms

He holds the stars and He holds my heart

With healing hands that bear the scars

The rugged cross where He died for me

My only hope, my everything

  • Remember being little and running everywhere -  through the house, through the yard, playing “catch me if you can?”
  • I remember thinking that I could definitely run faster than my dad.  However it wasn’t so.  He could always take a few steps, reach out, and catch me.
  • Our steps are never big enough, and never fast enough to match God’s.
  • He can always reach out and catch us.
  • Thinking about it though, I think you and I may have tried to evade getting caught, but in reality, we really did want dad to reach out and get us.

  • What has a hold of you today? Because truthfully there is something…
  • It may be an obligation to work, or an appointment you have to keep.  I’m sure there’s a to-do list that’s got you in its grasp, or some list of responsibilities a mile long.  I pray that it’s nothing dire - like an addiction or dysfunctional relationship.
  • This song paints a picture of being held.  It’s a great tale.  It goes from being held by the world, to having your heart held by Jesus.
  • Can you let Him hold you today?  It’s a grip that frees you when the world holds you down.

  • I found out that the painter, Pablo Picasso, actually wrote a play.  It’s called “Desire Caught by the Tail.”
  • Wikipedia describes it as "simply weird," a play that’s rarely produced due to its sheer incomprehensibility. There is no plot or story to speak of.
  • Even though I haven’t seen it, I think I can make an expert commentary on it, because I am an expert on desire.  Every day I find something that I want.  It may be something on a menu.  It might be wanting to buy something, or experience something.  Sometimes I’ll fixate on it.
  • When I stop to really think about it, though, I realize how “simply weird” it is that I can’t get my mind off of it.
  • Desires have a tendency to grab at us like that with no rhyme or reason.  However, this is a song about a purposeful desire - it’s about someone’s desire to reach out and hold us, and then involve us in the greatest story ever.

    Scripture References

    Psalm 139:7-10

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?  If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.  If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.

    Psalm 107:13-16

Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and broke away their chains. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron.

    Romans 8:35

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall he able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

    Your Own Experiences

Talk about the first time you learned the first version of "Jesus Loves Me."  Talk about how it's the first message that any of us need to hear.

Mention this line in the song:  "With healing hands that bear the scars."  Then think about a time you felt rejected and you had to remember that Jesus would never reject you.  Is that a way that His healing hands heal your scars?
A life before Christ, to a life with Christ.  This is the song that goes with any story like that.

One of my favorite lines in this song is “Jesus, He loves me, He loves me, He is for me”

Jesus is FOR you not against you… when you hear that inner voice you can always tell if it is Jesus IF it is a voice of encouragement and love.

If it condemns, guilt’s, and accuses you it’s a lie and not what God would have you believe.

Don’t get me wrong sin isn’t cool but a friend tells you that something you are doing isn’t good for you – they don’t condemn you – hear the difference…

“You messed up again that’s all you ever do!” versus “Hey that’s not good for you, you need to change that”

“You will never be free from that sin. You are no good and you never have been any good.” versus “You shouldn’t have done that because it wasn’t honorable but it’s okay I love you – you can try again and again and I will love you every time and help you not do those things.”

Choose to listen to the voice of Jesus not your accuser … Jesus loves you … He is FOR you… a truth you can know is absolutely true.
