Taking It Deeper

When I'm far away from home
And the cold wind starts to blow
When I'm empty and alone
I turn to you.
When there's hardness in my heart
and I can’t see the truth
And I'm wandering in the dark
I Turn To You
And here in your holy presence
It's all that I can do
I Turn To You, Jesus
I Turn To You, Lord!
What else can I do, Jesus?
I Turn To You.
For the faith to move ahead
and to let go of the past
and to see me as you do
I Turn To You.
And here in your holy presence
It's all that I can do
You alone are worthy
The one and only God
The Ruler of the nations
And Father of my heart
Help me turn to you

  •  Sometimes we’re not as strong as our coffee.
  • That’s when we need to turn to His warmth instead.

  • Have you ever heard the saying “If it were a snake it would’ve bit ya?”
  • It means you were close to something but unaware of it.
  • That’s kind of like this (that) song.
  • God is so close - so close that all we have to do is turn and there He is.
  • Yet we are so unaware of that at times.

  • Todd Smith, the lead singer of Selah, and his wife Angie, had a child, Audrey, who died 2 hours after birth.
  • So he knows about having the faith to move ahead as this (that) song mentions.
  • Henry and Tom Blackaby, in their book “The Man God uses” speaks of a crisis not always being a “tragedy” or “threat”
  • The truer understanding is that crisis often means “a turning point”
  • The authors say that “perhaps the crisis means that God is using you as His instrument to bring hope, peace, or truth into the situation.   Be careful not to be so focused on the crisis that you are unable to see God in the midst of it.”
  • Angie Smith has since been able to write two books, and have a blog and speaking ministry that has helped thousands of people who have lost a child.

  • There’s a difference between answers and closure.
  • For instance, when one spouse leaves another, you may have answers as to why it happened, but you won’t necessarily have closure.   There will still be a hole in your heart.
  • That’s why this (that) song says that waiting in His holy presence is sometimes all that we can do.
  • Being together with Him helps you slowly close the heavy door of your hurt.

  • People will watch you during your pain.
  • They will want to see if your faith is authentic.
  • Especially when there is no instant turnaround from when the bottom drops out in your life.
  • If they see you emerge, without bitterness or self-pity, then they will know that faith in Christ has the power to save people.

    Scripture References

    Deuteronomy 30:9-11

Then the Lord your God will make you most prosperous in all the work of your hands and in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your land. The Lord will again delight in you and make you prosperous, just as he delighted in your ancestors,  if you obey the Lord your God and keep his commands and decrees that are written in this Book of the Law and turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

    2 Chronicles 6:37-39

and if they have a change of heart in the land where they are held captive, and repent and plead with you in the land of their captivity and say, ‘We have sinned, we have done wrong and acted wickedly’;  and if they turn back to you with all their heart and soul in the land of their captivity where they were taken, and pray toward the land you gave their ancestors, toward the city you have chosen and toward the temple I have built for your Name; then from heaven, your dwelling place, hear their prayer and their pleas, and uphold their cause. And forgive your people, who have sinned against you.

    Psalm 119:58-60

    I have sought your face with all my heart;
be gracious to me according to your promise.

    I have considered my ways
and have turned my steps to your statutes.

I will hasten and not delay
    to obey your commands.

    Philippians 1:18-20

But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.

Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,  for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.  I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.

    Your Own Experiences

Explain how you’ve had to turn to Jesus for an answer in life.

Have you ever had to force yourself to rest in the presence of God?   Describe a situation where you did all that you could do, and the only other option was to give it up to Him.

There’s a line in this song that says “and to see me as you do, I turn to you.”   Has there ever been a time where it was pointed out to you how beautiful God sees you?
