Taking It Deeper

He is jealous for me
Loves like a hurricane
I am a tree
Bending beneath the weight of His wind and mercy

When all of a sudden
I am unaware of these afflictions eclipsed by glory
And I realize just how beautiful You are
And how great Your affections are for me

And oh, how He loves us so

Oh how He loves us

How He loves us all

Yeah, He loves us
Oh how He loves us
Oh how He loves us
Oh how He loves

And we are His portion and He is our prize
Drawn to redemption by the grace in His eyes
If His grace is an ocean, we’re all sinking

And Heaven meets Earth like an unforseen kiss
And the heart turns violently inside of my chest
I don’t have time to maintain these regrets
When I think about, the way

(Repeat Chorus)

How He Loves - David Crowder (w/ Matt Chandler & John Piper) from Fiti Oameni on Vimeo.

  • Do we often find ourselves bending beneath the weight of our past
  • Or beneath the weight of His mercy?

  • A blanket is a wonderful thing.
  • It covers up the faded old pajamas you’re wearing underneath.
  • If we ever find ourselves wearing our shame, or regrets, or our shortcomings out to the world, remember your blanket
  • And remember this line to this song:   “All of a sudden I am unaware of these afflictions eclipsed by glory.”
  • His glory is like a blanket that covers over your afflictions.

  • You can either have the weight of the world, or the weight of His love pressing down on you today.   Which one are you going to choose?

  • There's a great line in that song:   "I don't have time to maintain these regrets when I think about how He loves us."
  • Don't we often find ourselves looking behind - focusing on "what we should've done" - our regrets?
  • If you’re going to look to the past, maybe you should try remembering what He has done for you.
  • And then...you can look to the future with confidence, knowing that He’s going to be there for you again.

  • Someone once said:   “When you focus on what you don’t have, you get depressed,   but when you focus on what you do have, you get blessed.”
  • Do you have what this song focuses on... the powerful love of God?
  • Anyone can have it.
  • ...And having it, is a blessing above all others.

  • This song portrays the grace of God as something so powerful that we can’t stand up against it.
  • It has imagery like “His love being like a hurricane” and “His grace being an ocean that we’re all sinking in”
  • John 1:16 says “And of his fullness have we all received, and grace for grace
  • He heaps grace upon us,   - even after heaping grace on us - and that even after He has heaped grace on us.
  • Are you getting the picture?
  • There’s nothing you can do that will outmeasure His grace and His love for you.

    Scripture References

    Romans 3:23-24

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,   and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

    Romans 5:1-5

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,   through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.   Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;   perseverance, character; and character, hope.   And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.

    Romans 5:17

For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.

    Your Own Experiences

Keep a lookout for a listener phone call where they came through struggles and they attributed it to God’s love or grace.   Play it going into this song.

Describe a time when you were in love with someone, and you saw them hanging out with another guy or girl.   Were you jealous?   Remind the listener that God has that same kind of jealous love for them.   Go into the song with these words: “God desires your company, so what’s keeping you from him?”

When was a time you felt demoralized or denigrated?   Maybe it was a time when someone said untrue things about you behind your back?   Talk about this time of dis-grace, and how God used then used His grace to tell you about the truth - about His love for you.   Then tell the listener that God’s grace is enough for them in their disgrace.
