Taking It Deeper

Lyrics

It don't have a job, don't pay your bills
Won't buy you a home in Beverly Hills
Won't fix your life in five easy steps
Ain't the law of the land or the government?
But it's all you need

And love will hold us together
Make us a shelter to weather the storm
And I'll be my brother's keeper
So the whole world would know that we're not alone

It's waiting for you knocking at your door
In the moment of truth when your heart hits the floor
And you're on your knees

And love will hold us together
Make us a shelter to weather the storm
And I'll be my brother's keeper
So the whole world would know that we're not alone

This is the first day of the rest of your life
This is the first day of the rest of your life
'Cause even in the dark you can still see the light
It's gonna be alright, it's gonna be alright

This is the first day of the rest of your life
This is the first day of the rest of your life
'Cause even in the dark you can still see the light
It's gonna be alright, it's gonna be alright

Love will hold us together
Make us a shelter to weather the storm
And I'll be my brother's keeper
So the whole world would know that we're not alone

TID-bits

This song is about the Love of God being what you need to make it through a struggle in life.   The TID-Bits in blue below are some comparisons to that:

  • Describe your dog, and how he or she seems to know when you need some extra love.
  • Explain how just knowing you have someone to turn to, who loves you unconditionally, can get often get you through.   Even if you just have to get through the next 5 minutes.
  • Compare it to the line in the song that says, “It’s waiting for you.   Knocking at your door.”

--------------------------------------

  • Talk about a modern above ground storm shelter, and how they have to be built to a strict code to withstand 1.   Winds,  2. the penetration of objects thrown at them by tornadoes, and 3. the possible weight of a house falling on top of them.
  • Compare that to our emotional pain and how we need something strong to withstand things like rejection.
  • When you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are loved by God no matter what   - that can get you through emotional pain.
  • Tie it into this song saying that God’s love is a shelter that can weather the storm.

--------------------------------------

  • Compare God’s love to the sustain pedal on a piano.    It's something you constantly have to apply as you play.
  • The sustain pedal releases pressure on the strings to let them ring freely.
  • When we apply the fact that God loves us, it releases the pressure of “having to measure up” -   then we can live freely, becoming who we’re supposed to be.
  • God’s love is “all you need” like it says at the end of the first verse.   And the “first day of the rest of your life” is like the constant reapplication of the sustain pedal.

--------------------------------------

  • Did you ever notice that when you fall in love with someone it’s like pouring glue over your heart?
  • You are stuck to that person forever.   You will always remember them, always think of them.
  • If for some reason, you’re torn apart, it feels like a part of you is ripped away.
  • That’s why it’s best to glue your heart to one who will never leave you or forsake you.

--------------------------------------

  • Mother Teresa said “Joy is a net of love by which you can catch souls”
  • This (That) song reminds me that “joy in life” and “God’s love” are an endless circle that feed off of each other.
  • His love holds us together
  • Which gives us the joy to weather the storm.
  • Which lets us know how He loves us.
  • Which holds us together
  • Which gives us joy.
  • And, as Mother Teresa says, when you have that joy, you show that love, which brings others in.

------------------------------------

  • In 1882 a guy by the name of George Mattheson wrote a hymn called “O Love, that will not let me go.”
  • That love is still holding strong...
  • and the third verse goes like this:
  • O Joy that seekest me through pain,
    I cannot close my heart to thee;
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain,
    That morn shall tearless be.
  • His love will not let you go, and it will hold you together so that you can experience joy.

-----------------------------------

  • The brothers, Cain and Abel are found in the Bible in the book of Genesis.
  • Cain murdered Abel.
  • God asked Cain where his brother was, to which Cain replied “I know not; am I my brother’s keeper?”
  • Those words have come to symbolize people’s unwillingness to accept responsibility for the welfare of their fellow man.
  • However, we do have that responsibility.
  • And one of the best ways to do that is by showing others the love that God has given us.

------------------------------------

  • Did you know that if you interleave the pages of two phone books together, you can’t pull them apart.
  • That’s right, no glue, just take two phone books, and go through them page by page laying one page on top of another.
  • The same thing happens when you constantly put God’s love between the pages of your life.
  • You get a bond that gets you through anything.

    Scripture References

    1 Corinthians 13:4-8a

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.   It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

    Love never fails.

    Psalm 33:22

May your unfailing love be with us, LORD, even as we put our hope in you.

    Romans 5:8

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

    Your Own Experiences

Play this song for someone who has called into the station with a broken heart.

    ------------------------------------

Talk about the scariest thunderstorm you ever experienced, and what got you through it.   Compare that to God’s love getting you through an emotional storm in life.

    ------------------------------------

Was there a time you didn’t have a job, or couldn’t pay your bills like the first line of the song talks about.   How did you actually make it through?
