Taking It Deeper

Spent today in a conversation

In the mirror face to face with

somebody less than perfect

I wouldn't choose me first if

I was looking for a champion

In fact I'd understand if

You picked everyone before me

But that's just not my story

True to who You are

You saw my heart

and made

Something out of nothing

I don't need my name in lights

I'm famous in my Father's eyes

Make no mistake

He knows my name

I'm not living for applause

I'm already so adored

It's all His stage

He knows my name oh, oh,

He knows my name oh, oh

I'm not meant to just stay quiet

I'm meant to be a lion

I'll roar beyond a song

With every moment that I've got

True to who You are

You saw my heart

and made

Something out of nothing

He calls me chosen, free forgiven, wanted, child of the King,

His forever, held in treasure...

I am loved

I don't need my name in lights...

I'm famous in my Father's eyes...

Have you ever met a celebrity?  About the most famous person I've met was a guy named Rupert, the tie-dyed pirate dude from Survivor.  I also met Regis once.  However, these were in the days before Facebook.  If I had social media back then - guess who's picture would've been on my feed that day? Me and Rupert.

This is why I've stopped checking social media the first thing everyday.  It's because a few friends are going to have "Rupert moments" at any given time, and the constant barrage of cool stuff makes me feel like I'm pretty dull.  Dull stands left of boring, and boring stands pretty close to loser, and loser is who I end up seeing when I'm standing in front of the mirror.

That's what this song says in the first verse -  "Looking in the mirror face to face with somebody less than perfect." Someone who gets picked last.  It then goes on to say that you truly are the opposite of that.  Someone who is known by the God of the Universe.  Someone who is famous in His eyes.  This song says God would put a picture of you and He on His home page as someone cool that He met.

It's great to remember the positive self affirming feelings from these lyrics, but what would be even better is if you took the words to 2 Corinthians 10:5 to heart:

We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ

The word "arguments" here is the Greek "logismos," and in this case it means false reasonings. False logic.  The Bible talks about our worth, how we were bought with a great price, and even how we're co-heirs in Christ. That's the true reasoning and the knowledge of us that God has.

OK.  True confession time.  I wasn't exactly truthful with you above:  You see, God wouldn't put your picture on His Facebook feed as someone cool He's met.  It's different than that.  He'd ACTUALLY put your picture on there the same way that you'd share your child's picture when you are beaming about them.

Here's the bottom line:

Constantly take captive any thought that wants to tell you you're no good,

Remember that God beams about you because you're His child,

and use this song as a backup when you need a reminder.

  • Where were you in the playground picking order? Did you get called first, or last?
  • It's a life long obsession for us.  We always want to be picked first.  When it happens we're happy.  More often than not, we get relegated to somewhere in the middle, or somewhere near the end.
  • Jesus knew we have this natural obsession.  He taught about how the last shall be first.  He wants us to know that it's not our strength, or our beauty, or our leadership ability that gets us in.
  • It's His love for us.

  • We start out small but mighty. Preschoolers running through the house with towels wrapped around our shoulders - pretending we’re Superman.
  • But as we grow older, the world brings its kryptonite upon us, weakening us, until we stand in front of the mirror only seeing Clark Kent.
  • Sometimes we need to remember that there is still something mighty inside of us.
  • That’s the gift given to you by this song…

  • There are executive health assessments you can have taken, where they look at your heart and your habits and evaluate your risks for having a heart attack.
  • This (That) song is like that.  It helps you examine your heart to see if you are vulnerable to attacks.
  • However, these are attacks that beat at your heart - the ones that tell you you’re not good enough.
  • Don’t listen to them.  You are a child of God, and He calls you good.

    Scripture References

    1 Samuel 16:7

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.

    Psalm 139:13-16

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.

    Ephesians 2:4-9

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ by grace you have been saved and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,

    Matthew 6:25-34

Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

    Revelation 2:17

Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.

    1 John 3:2

Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

    Galatians 3:26

So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith,

    1 John 3:1
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

    Your Own Experiences

What are the things you tell yourself in the mirror?  Do they tend to be positive, or negative?  Remind yourself and your listeners that if you’ve accepted Jesus, then God sees a reflection of His Son when He looks at you.  Because of that you only have reasons to say positive things about yourself.

Did you ever participate in name calling?  You probably don’t want to share details, but you can share the regret you feel in doing it.  Encourage the listener to use words and names that build one another up like 1 Thessalonians 5:11 says:  “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”

Have you ever been tempted to name drop? Why do we do that?  It’s because we think it gives us instant credibility.  How about turning that idea around:  Name drop the name of Jesus TO YOURSELF.  It’ll help you realize that you have someone already with you who sees you as credible, wonderful, and worthy.
