Taking It Deeper

Lyrics

One day when Heaven was filled with His praises
One day when sin was as black as could be
Jesus came forth to be born of a virgin
Dwelt among men, my example is He
Word became flesh and the light shined among us
His glory revealed

Living, He loved me
Dying, He saved me
Buried, He carried my sins far away
Rising, He justified freely forever
One day He's coming
Oh glorious day, oh glorious day

One day they led Him up Calvary's mountain
One day they nailed Him to die on a tree
Suffering anguish, despised and rejected
Bearing our sins, my Redeemer is He
Hands that healed nations, stretched out on a tree
And took the nails for me

One day the grave could conceal Him no longer
One day the stone rolled away from the door
Then He arose, over death He had conquered
Now He's ascended, my Lord evermore
Death could not hold Him, the grave could not keep Him
From rising again

One day the trumpet will sound for His coming
One day the skies with His glories will shine
Wonderful day, my Beloved One, bringing
My Savior, Jesus, is mine

Oh, glorious day

TID-bits

The great thing about hymns are that they often have a beginning, a middle, and an end, and each verse further enlightens us about a journey.   So it is with this song.

“Glorious Day” invites your listeners to really listen and discover the journey that is Christ’s life.   The first verse talks about His birth.   The second verse sings about His death.   The third verse highlights His resurrection, and the bridge is all about Him showing up again.

In-between those verses there's the chorus, which in just 30 words, encapsulates whats sung in all four verses.   It’s a masterful piece of writing.

One of the most encouraging things you can do with this song is remind your listeners that God has them on a journey.   They may be living well right now, or they may be in a process of being restored. Some, sadly, may be in a process of dying - either physically or emotionally.   However, God has them on a journey with Him, and He is leading them to a glorious day.

  • This (That) song sings about a journey of living and dying and coming back to life again.
  • It makes me think of Brennan Manning, an author who is best known for the book “The Ragamuffin Gospel.”
  • Brennan really showed light on how God is not just a father, but He is a “daddy” to us.
  • As an author and speaker, He’s experienced glorious days of touching hearts.
  • He’s also had horrible days of suffering.
  • Right now health issues make it hard for him to walk and speak, and Superstorm Sandy took away his home and his inventory of books.
  • If he has touched you with his writings, he could use your help right now.   You can find out more at www.brennanmanning.com.
  • Maybe you could help bring glorious days back to him.

----------------------------

  • The lyrics to this song actually come from a hymn entitled “One Day”
  • The hymn was written by John Wilbur Chapman, an evangelist from the late 1800’s, early 1900’s.
  • One of his disciples was Billy Sunday, the most renowned evangelist in the early 20th century.
  • Chapman died Christmas Day, 1918.
  • Amazing that his “Glorious Day” came on the day that is sung about in the first verse of this song.

----------------------------

  • Here’s what Casting Crowns Mark Hall has to say about this song:
  • The hymn "One Day" was a big hymn for me growing up. All I knew was hymns until probably 21 or 22 years old; that’s what we had in our church.
  • The chorus: "Living He loved me, dying He saved me, buried He carried my sins far away,"   has just been a part of me from the start.
  • He said “As a youth pastor, you want your students to hear the theology of the hymns and sometimes you have to play it a little different way.”   That’s why He re-wrote the melody.

----------------------------

  • As Christian’s we “start”   in John 1   - “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”   It then says that that Word became flesh.
  • That “Word becoming Flesh” is what happened at Christmas.
  • And we “end” in Revelations 22:20   - “He who testifies to these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming soon.’   Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.”
  • Jesus, had died, He rose again, and now He’s coming again.
  • This song’s beginning celebrates out the birth of Christ.   The rest tells of His death and resurrection, and His coming again.
  • But we don’t have to wait for the Glorious Day when He returns, because He invites you now to share endless “Glorious Days” with Him.

--------------------------

  • You know, I've been a Christian a long time, but I didn't know that the words of this song came from an old hymn
  • One great thing about being a Christian is that everyday you tend to discover something new about God.
  • You may have questions about your life right now.   The first thing you gotta do is ask God about it.
  • Maybe tell Him your desire to get closer to Him,
  • because the glorious thing is that when you get closer, you end up getting His insight into the answers you seek.
