Taking It Deeper

Lyrics

When I sit back and imagine

Life without You, I can't fathom

How I ever thought I'd make it on my own

And there's at least a million reasons

I'm still standing here believin'

You're my comfort, You're my healin'

This I know (this I know)

Well, you can't see the wind, but it moves the leaves

From the bottom to the top of the tallest trees

You are everything I will ever need

And they can't take that from me

Oh, I feel it in my heart

I feel it in my soul

That's how I know

You take our brokenness and make us beautiful

Yeah, that's how I know

Everybody talkin' like they need some proof

But what more do I need than to feel You

When I sit back and imagine

Life without You, I can't fathom

How I ever thought I'd make it on my own

And there's at least a million reasons

I'm still standing here believin'

You're my comfort, You're my healin'

This I know (this I know)

Well, you can't see the wind, but it moves the leaves

From the bottom to the top of the tallest trees

You are everything I will ever need

And they can't take that from me

Oh, I feel it in my heart

I feel it in my soul

That's how I know

You take our brokenness and make us beautiful

Yeah, that's how I know

(Can't take that from me)

Love came crashin' in

Never gonna be the same again

Yeah, You came crashing in

You wrecked me, You wrecked me

Love came crashin' in

Never gonna be the same again

Yeah, You came crashing in

You wrecked me

That's how I know

Oh, I feel it in my heart

I feel it in my soul

That's how I know

You take our brokenness and make us beautiful

Yeah, that's how I know

Oh, I feel it in my heart

I feel it in my soul

That's how I know

You take our brokenness and make us beautiful

Yeah, that's how I know

That's how I know

Everybody talkin' like they need some proof

But what more do I need than to feel You

Everybody talkin' like they need some proof

But what more do I need than to feel You

TID-bits

Remember when you grew up and moved out?  Afterward, your mom would call you and tell you how quiet the house was. It wasn’t the same type of quiet as when you were away at a friends house, or at a camp.  No, it was different.  It was as if the spirit of the place changed.  There was less laundry, less food to buy, less to keep track of.  Your room was a place they didn’t go into as much, because it just seemed weird, like if someone had changed your favorite orange juice for a low-cal version.

We know about “presence.”  We understand the feeling of someone missing.  We can feel when someone is watching us.  It’s a natural part of our being; but like our conscience, it’s something we can’t see.  Just feel.  So it’s totally believable to me when someone says “I just don’t feel God’s presence right now.”

It’s like that prodigal son that moves away and spends all his money.  He has to go hungry to understand the missing presence of his father.  Remarkably, you too can get back to feeling the presence of your Heavenly Father if you’ve gone missing from Him.  Psalm 63:1 describes the process:

You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you;  I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. Psalm 63:1 (NIV)

The key word is “earnestly” which the dictionary says is showing sincere and intense conviction.  A few verses down in Psalm 63 it says this:

Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. Psalm 63:7 (NIV)

Notice that David, after expressing his earnest desire for God, has now found Him.  However, he hasn’t found Him physicially.  He’s singing under a feeling.  A shadow.

If you need to feel Him, stop and realize your hunger.  Stop and earnestly seek Him.  Open a Bible.  Sing a song.  It may take 5 minutes, 5 hours, or 5 days but you’ll get to the point where you’ll say “He’s my comfort, he’s my healin’ this I know.”

SCRIPTURE REFERENCES

2 Corinthians 1:3–5 (NIV)

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,  who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.  For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.

Psalm 139:7–10 (NIV)

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?  If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.  If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea,  even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.

Psalm 105:4–5 (ESV)

Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually!  Remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he uttered,
