Taking It Deeper

Lyrics

I've had just enough of the spotlight when it burns bright
To see how it gets in the blood.
And I've tasted my share of the sweet life and the wild ride
And found a little is not quite enough.
I know how I can stray
And how fast my heart could change.

Empty me of the selfishness inside
Every vain ambition and the poison of my pride
And any foolish thing my heart holds to
Lord empty me of me so I can be filled with you.

I've seen just enough of the quick buys of the best lies
To know how prodigals can be drawn away.
I know how I can stray
And how fast my heart could change.

Empty me of the selfishness inside
Every vain ambition and the poison of my pride
And any foolish thing my heart holds to
Lord empty me of me so I can be filled with you.

Cause everything is a lesser thing
Compared to you, compared to you.
Cause everything is a lesser thing
Compared to you so why surrender all?

Empty me of the selfishness inside
Every vain ambition and the poison of my pride
Empty me of the selfishness inside
Every vain ambition and the poison of my pride
And any foolish thing my heart holds to
Lord empty me of me so I can be
Lord empty me of me so I can be filled with you.
Oh, filled with you.
Empty me.

TID-bits

  • Talk about being in an argument with someone, and having to be “right”
  • Mention “being right” as being a pride issue, and compare it to Chris Sligh’s line about “the poison of my pride”
  • Finish with “there is an antidote to that poison.”   John the Baptist said it best:   “I must decrease and He (Jesus) must increase.”

------------------------------------

  • Talk about the condition of your kitchen.   Is it a mess?
  • Mention that “you can’t create healthy food if you don’t clean it up”
  • Finish with “In the same way, God can’t create a masterpiece in you, if you don’t get rid of ‘the foolish things that your heart holds to.’”

------------------------------------

  • Talk about your experience with “greater than” and “less than” signs in math.   Mention that your brain always stutters trying to remember which is which.
  • Compare that to how we always battle between who should be greater and least in our lives.   Our tendency is to put ourselves first, to make ourselves “greater”
  • Finish with this:   “Life tends to work better when our name is to the left of the less than sign, and God’s name is to the right.”

---------------------------------

  • Talk about baking a cake, about putting all the ingredients in the bowl in the right measure, in the right order.
  • Mention that “it would be sheer arrogance to just grab handfuls of flour and sugar and throw them in a bowl, thinking we know how to make a cake without directions.”
  • Finish with “God knows what direction to take to make your life beautiful.   Trust Him to add the right ingredients today.”

---------------------------------

  • Mention that even a slow drip in the bathtub can cause a flood if the drain is clogged.
  • Compare that to all the stuff we slowly fill our lives with, like the constant thoughts of our own importance.
  • Finish by encouraging the listeners to open up the drain, and letting God fill them up with His thoughts instead.

    Scripture References

    John 3:30 (KJV)

He must increase, but I must decrease.

    ---------------------------------

    Proverbs 11:2

When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

    ---------------------------------

    Proverbs 16:18

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.

    ---------------------------------

    Isaiah 2:17

The arrogance of man will be brought low and the pride of men humbled; the Lord alone will be exalted in that day,

    ---------------------------------

    James 1:9

The brother in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position.

    ---------------------------------

    James 4:6

But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

    ---------------------------------

    James 4:10

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

    Your Own Experiences

Talk about your car or your computer getting all gunked up, and how cleaning it up made it run better.   It’s the same with your life.

    ---------------------------------

Talk about something you filled your life with that ended up crowding out God.   What did you do about it?

    ---------------------------------

Talk about being somewhat of a celebrity just because you’re on the radio, and how you’re really just a normal person.   Mention though that it would be very easy to get yourself puffed up and feeling important.   Talk about something that happened that kept you humble.

Love, love, love the blue type thought starters.
I use them on other songs to, that have similar themes.
