Taking It Deeper

Lyrics

I woke up this morning
Saw a world full of trouble now
Thought, how’d we ever get so far down
How’s it ever gonna turn around
So I turned my eyes to Heaven
I thought, “God, why don’t You do something?”
Well, I just couldn’t bear the thought of
People living in poverty
Children sold into slavery
The thought disgusted me
So, I shook my fist at Heaven
Said, “God, why don’t You do something?”
He said, “I did, I created you”

If not us, then who
If not me and you
Right now, it’s time for us to do something
If not now, then when
Will we see an end
To all this pain
It’s not enough to do nothing
It’s time for us to do something

I’m so tired of talking
About how we are God’s hands and feet
But it’s easier to say than to be
Live like angels of apathy who tell ourselves
It’s alright, “somebody else will do something”
Well, I don’t know about you
But I’m sick and tired of life with no desire
I don’t want a flame, I want a fire
I wanna be the one who stands up and says,
“I’m gonna do something”

If not us, then who
If not me and you
Right now, it’s time for us to do something
If not now, then when
Will we see an end
To all this pain
It’s not enough to do nothing
It’s time for us to do something

We are the salt of the earth
We are a city on a hill (shine shine, shine shine)
But we’re never gonna change the world
By standing still
No we won’t stand still
No we won’t stand still
No we won’t stand still

If not us, then who
If not me and you
Right now, it’s time for us to do something
If not now, then when
Will we see an end
To all this pain
It’s not enough to do nothing
It’s time for us to do something [x3]

TID-bits

  • Doing something can be a big deal - like “adopting a child.”
  • Or it could be something simple - like letting one of your kid’s friends come over, just to have a positive influence.
  • No matter what you do, big or small, if you do it with the idea of showing the love of Christ as your motivation.
  • Then it’s always a big deal.

———————————————————-

  • In the book “Getting Things Done” David Allen writes about “2 minute tasks.”
  • It’s a way to get you moving.  If you have something to do that takes 2 minutes or less, do it -  Do it now.
  • We can get paralyzed because we all have so much to do, and everything seems to have the same priority.
  • The suggestion here is to start with something small.  Just do something to get you going.
  • So what can you do - right now - that would bring God’s love?  Make a phone call?  Send an e-mail?  Don’t hesitate.  Go for it.

———————————————————-

  • If left to my own design, I’d want to take the easy way out.  I’d want God to solve all the problems of the world.
  • However, that’s not His design.
  • His design is that we use the love He’s given us to be a light that draws others to Him.
  • Think of it like this:  If He solved everything for us, all at once, we wouldn’t be very motivated to do anything.
  • But if we see Him working in us, and others see the same thing, then we love Him more, and others want the same thing.

  • The Sea of Galilee is just a small dot on the map.  12 miles long by 9 miles wide.
  • Yet in the area of this small dot, the world was changed.  Jesus did incredible ministry there.
  • Your place in this world is probably not much bigger.  You probably do most of your work in the same size area.
  • But it’s your area.  And there are other Christians there too.  Be encouraged. We all can change the world by operating in our individual dots.

    Scripture References

    Esther 4:14

For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”

    ———————————————————-

    1 Samuel 17:32 & 37

And David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”

And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”

    ———————————————————-

    Numbers 6:24-26

This is a blessing that can be said before someone ventures out to do something for the Lord:

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you;  the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.

    Your Own Experiences

Are you a procrastinator?  Think of a time you did the opposite of that - a time when you acted immediately.  Talk about how good that felt.

    ———————————————————-

Would you have had the life changing experience of knowing Christ without someone else guiding you in that way?  Talk about how that happened and encourage the listener to step up and to do something that expresses the love of Christ for someone else today.

    ———————————————————-

Talk about a time that you were in the right place at the right time to help someone.  Relate it to this song.  Encourage the listener to not be afraid when that time comes.

Here’s a Biblical example of that:  Acts 8:26-40.  Phillip and the Ethiopian Eunuch.  A story of when Phillip was there to tell someone about Jesus.
