Taking It Deeper

Lyrics

We were made to be courageous

We were made to lead the way

We could be the generation

That finally breaks the chain

We were made to be courageous

We were made to be courageous

We were warriors on the front lines

Standing, unafraid

But now we're watchers on the sidelines

While our families slip away

Where are you, men of courage?

You were made for so much more

Let the pounding of hearts cry

We will serve the Lord

(CHORUS)

We were made to be courageous

And we're taking back the fight

We were made to be courageous

And it starts with us tonight

The only way we'll ever stand

Is on our knees we're lifting hands

Make us courageous

Lord, make us courageous

This is our resolution

Our answer to the call

We will love our wives and children

We refuse to let them fall

We will reignite the passion

That we buried deep inside

May the watchers become warriors

Let the men of God arise

(REPEAT CHORUS)

Seek justice

Love mercy

Walk humbly with your God

In the war of the mind

I will make my stand

In the battle of the heart

And the battle of the hand

In the war of the mind

I will make my stand

In the battle of the heart

And the battle of the hand

(REPEAT CHORUS)

We were made to be courageous

Lord, make us courageous

TID-bits

A lot of your listeners are familiar with this song because of the movie “Courageous.”   They know that it’s about how men should stand up for their families.   However, this song can be given a fresh take by focusing on the line that says “we were MADE to be courageous.”   That’s the line that makes this song appropriate for any situation in life.   Here are some examples:

  • When you’re heading to hear test results, you were made to be courageous.
  • When you have to become your parent’s caregiver, you were made to be courageous.
  • When the checkbook has nothing left in it, you were made to be courageous.
  • When the success of that big project means the future for your company, you were made to be courageous.

Everyday, every situation is another chance to pray the prayer in this song:   “Lord make us courageous.”   Lead your listeners to the courage that you and they need today.   Talk about the situation in life that you need courage for, and confess this prayer:   “Lord, make ME courageous!”

Christianity is a radical decision. Chuck Swindoll in his book "Wisdom for the Way" says "At the deepest level, even though the majority may not want to admit it, most people are conformists. That is why it is correctly termed a radical decision. Only a radically different mindset can equip folks like us to stand alone when we're outnumbered. It takes courage to think alone, to resist alone, to stand alone - especially when the crowd seems so safe, so right."

(FROM ROBIN ROBINSON, WHIF)

  • Courage doesn't always look like a cavalry charge...sabers raised and guns-a-blazing.  Sometimes it's quietly getting up, dusting yourself off and saying, "I'll try again."

-----------------------------------------

  • Courage doesn’t come without fear.
  • And the Bible has a lot to say about fear.
  • Some scholars have said that there are 366 instances in the Bible that tell us not to fear.
  • One for everyday, with leap year included.
  • It would make sense, because we need to continually be reminded that God is there to give us courage.

-----------------------------------------

  • The Bible speaks of two types of fear
  • Fear of the Lord, and the spirit of fear.
  • The first one we need.   It’s the beginning of wisdom.
  • The second one we need God to give us the courage to overcome.

-----------------------------------------

  • Dr. Stew Webber, in his book, "Tender Warriors," writes: "Fathers and husbands need to learn faithfulness. Stand by your promises. Never, never let go no matter what.
  • When marriage isn't fun, stay with it.
  • When parenting is over your head, stay with it.
  • When work is crushing your spirit, don't let it beat you.
  • When the local church is overcome with pettiness, stay faithful, stay by it.
  • When your children let you down, pick them up.
  • When your wife goes through a six-month mood swing, live with it and be faithful to her.
  • Being courageous is being faithful, it is “staying with it.”

-----------------------------------------

  • There was a book that came out a few years ago called “men are like waffles and women are like spaghetti.”
  • It basically said that men compartmentalize their lives while everything a woman does is intertwined.
  • In other words, men take on one project at a time.
  • However, just like a waffle is made up of flour, eggs, and milk,   men have to keep God, their spouse, and their family foundational to whatever they’re doing.
  • This (That) is a song that calls men to keep those fundamentals.

-----------------------------------------

  • It’s like an oil spill in the garage.
  • It’s a layer on the floor that you can easily slip on,
  • And the line of this (that) song that says: “We were warriors on the front lines standing, unafraid.  But now we're watchers on the sidelines, while our families slip away” speaks to that.
  • A marriage starts like a nice clean garage floor.   A clean foundation of a strong relationship.
  • But our jobs, the recognition we get, the success, the “things” and possessions, all add layers onto that foundation like a oil spill.
  • As we add more, it starts to get really messy.
  • And we start to slip away from those foundations.
  • This (That) song encourages us to clean it up, and to have the courage to keep those foundations clean and strong.

  1. KSBJ says:

Read this in a Chuck Swindoll devo – “it takes courage to think alone, to resist alone, to stand alone – especially when the crowd seems so safe, so right.”

I used it as “It takes courage not to join in the water cooler gossip at the office…”

    XOXO,
