Taking It Deeper

She got the call today
One out of the gray
And when the smoke cleared
It took her breath away
She said she didn't believe
It could happen to me
I guess we're all one phone call from our knees
We're gonna get there soon
If every building falls
And all the stars fade
We'll still be singing this song
The one they can't take away
I'm gonna get there soon
She's gonna be there too
Cryin' in her room
Prayin' oh, Lord come through
We're gonna get there soon
Oh, it's your light
Oh, it's your way
Pull me out of the dark
Just to shoulder the weight
Cryin' out now From so far away
You pull me closer to love
Closer to love
Meet me once again
Down off Lake Michigan
Where we could feel the storm blowin'
Down with the wind
And don't apologize
For all the tears you've cried
You've been way too strong now for all your life
I'm gonna get there soon
You're gonna be there too
Cryin' in your room
Prayin' Lord come through
We're gonna get there soon
Cause you are all that I've waited for all of my life
(We're gonna get there)
You are all that I've waited all of my life
You pull me closer to love
Closer to love
Pull me closer to love (You are all that I've waited for)
You pull me closer to love
Closer to love Closer to love (Cause you are all that I've waited for)
Closer to love
Pull me closer to love

My wife and I always played this little game with our kids.   One of them, say it was my oldest son, would be sitting on mom’s lap and she’d hug him and say “He’s my boy.”   Then I would pull him away and say, “No, he’s my boy.”   We’d do that back and forth for awhile, until finally we’d finish the game by saying “OK, I guess we’ll share him.”

It was a silly little thing, mainly designed to make our kids giggle, but I think about it when I hear this song saying “you pull me closer to love.”

God knows that the phone calls come out of the grey - ones that take your breath away - and they cause us to hide in our rooms praying “Lord, come through.”   It is in those times, while we’re waiting for the answers, that God supernaturally holds us and says “You’re my boy” or “You’re my girl,” and the only thing that can get us out of His grip is ourselves wiggling free.

This song invites you to stay in that grip.

  • Take a look at the pictures found here:   Put this link on your show page. http://www.buzzfeed.com/txblacklabel/true-love-in-pictures-only-28m7
  • Imagine being the girl getting the call about this.
  • Talk about the tears that she had to have cried.
  • Describe the love required to stand by a loved one after a horrible accident.
  • Describe how she carried him.
  • Finish with this song, and how it carries you , and how God can come through for you just like this woman did for her husband.

  • We’re all on a journey, a “trip closer to love”
  • A friend of mine sends birthday greetings that say “Congratulations, I got you a free trip around the sun”
  • Now that’s a real trip!
  • However, as each of us take that trip, it’s one that we’re never really aware of.
  • That’s because each daily trip around the sun is full of trials and deadlines and relationships (both good and bad) that take all our attention,
  • and even though they keep us from savoring the journey,
  • they are also things that God uses bit by bit to draw us closer to His love.
  • (OPTIONAL) Even this... (then do a traffic or weather report, etc)...

  • This (That) is a “first responder” type song
  • It’s because it’s all about pulling people “out of the dark” and “into the light”
  • You may be trapped in something you don’t think you can get out of, but God is still in the rescuing business, and He wants to rescue you.

  • There’s a line in this (that) song that gets me every time.   It says:
  • “I guess we're all one phone call from our knees.”
  • If you’ve gotten that kind of phone call, maybe you’re listening to this radio station for a reason.
  • It’s because we’re here, everyday, with encouragement that helps you get through those phone calls.

  • There’s a line in the middle of this song that says:
  • “And don't apologize, For all the tears you've cried, You've been way too strong now for all your life.”
  • There’s also a great Bible verse for those who identify with that line, and also for those who just need to have a good cry today,
  • It’s Psalm 126:5 which says “Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy.”
  • Situations that bring tears tend to pull us closer to God’s love,
  • And when we get closer to Him, He shows us how to have joy, even through our tears.

    Scripture References

    Psalm 6:3-4

My soul is in anguish. How long, O Lord, how long? Turn, O Lord, and deliver me; save me because of your unfailing love.

    Hebrews 12:11

No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

    James 4:8a

Come near to God and he will come near to you.

    Your Own Experiences

Tell your story about getting a phone call that “took your breath away.”

Tell a story when you were crying in your room, praying that the Lord would come through.

This song talks about being pulled out of the dark and into His light.   One great example of that is how His Word will shine insights into life.   Talk about the most recent time that God illuminated your life through a Bible verse.
