A lot of times when people give a Gospel illustration they talk about how there is a great chasm between God and man, and the only way to cross it is by believing in the work done by Jesus Christ on the cross.   The cross becomes, in effect, the bridge that crosses the chasm.

Every time I picture that, I still think, “yeah, but there’s still the top of the cross sticking up in the middle of the bridge.   How am I supposed to get around that?!?”

I think of it this way:   The connection to God is there, but He’s going to have to carry you over the obstacles in life.   You can’t get close to Him on your own.   He has to bring you.

That’s the difference between Christianity and all other religions.   Christianity is the only one where God comes to you.   All the others are pursuits to try and please a god or gods.

So let the listeners know that if they are having any obstacles in their lives that they think are keeping them away from God, they just need to let Him know of their desire to be close.   He is more than willing to carry them to Him.    

Deuteronomy 1:30-31 says so:   “The   Lord   your God, who is going before you, will fight   for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes,   and in the desert. There you saw how the   Lord   your God carried   you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.”


  • Is every day just the same?   Same drive to work.   Same routine at night?
  • Maybe that’s why out of the ordinary things happen.
  • To shake us up, to get us praying, to get us seeking God for help.


  • Don’t you love it when the kids say “I’m bored?”
  • I usually tell them to be thankful for that.
  • They could have our exciting lives of working, paying bills, trying to figure out how to raise Godly kids.
  • This song (that song) is about getting closer to God, even through the boring stuff
  • Perhaps tell your kids that if they’re bored, maybe that means that God is trying to get through to them in some way.


  • Calvin Miller wrote that   “when you’re hungry for something, you spend time with it and enjoy it without measuring or watching the clock.”
  • He says that “If we had more of a love affair going with God, we wouldn’t be so concerned about finding the time to set aside with God.”
  • The problem is   that we’re not hungry for Him.
  • If we were, we’d eat more.
  • It’s the whole “praying without ceasing” thing.
  • Are you hungry enough for Him to seek His presence all day long?

    Exodus 3:4-6

    Your Own Experiences


    Take a different route to or from work today and pray for people you see.   Or go up to an official, like a police officer or soldier and say you’re praying for them.   How did God speak to you through that experience.   If it gets you out of your comfort zone, and makes you feel closer to God, relate the story on the air.


    Talk about you and your friends facebook statuses.   Some post only exciting, out of the ordinary things, some just post everyday life kind of things.   Which kind of poster are you?   Maybe try posting how God is working through your everyday things - that would make them exciting!


    Talk about a “desert” experience in your life, one where you didn’t feel close to God.   What broke the drought?
