Taking It Deeper

Lyrics

If you gotta start somewhere why not here
If you gotta start sometime why not now
If we gotta start somewhere I say here
If we gotta start sometime I say now
Through the fog there is hope in the distance
From cathedrals to third world missions
Love will fall to the earth like a crashing wave

Tonight's the night
For the sinners and the saints
Two worlds collide in a beautiful display
It's all love tonight
When we step across the line
We can sail across the sea
To a city with one king
A city on our knees
A city on our knees
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

If you gotta start somewhere why not here
If you gotta start sometime why not now
If we gotta start somewhere I say here
If we gotta start sometime I say now
Through the fog there is hope in the distance
From cathedrals to third world missions
Love will fall to the earth like a crashing wave

(REPEAT CHORUS)

Tonight couldn't last forever
We are one choice from together
Tonight couldn't last forever
Ooh
Tonight couldn't last forever
We are one choice from together
As family
We're family
Oh Tonight couldn't last forever
We are one choice from together
You and me
Ya, you and me

(REPEAT CHORUS)

A city on our knees
A city on our knees
Oh oh oh
A city on our knees
A city on our knees
Oh oh oh

If we gotta start somewhere why not here
If we gotta start sometime why not now

TID-bits

This is a song about making a decision, the biggest decision of all actually.   The decision to follow Christ.   If you have the privilege of talking about that on your airwaves, then this is the perfect “altar call” song.

For all other uses the key line of the song to draw your listeners in is this:   “Through the fog there is hope in the distance.”   A pastor friend of mine once said that when he preaches he assumes that there are at least 80% of his congregation that are hurting in some way.   That’s probably a pretty safe assumption for your audience, too.    There are probably close to 80% of them that are in some degree of "fog" as they focus on their problems.

So, take  anything  that can be hurting someone and tie it into that line.   Marital problems, health problems, financial problems, child rearing problems, work related problems, school problems.   “Whatever fog your problems have you in, there is hope in the distance.“

All it takes is getting on our knees and going to the God of that city.

  • Have you ever watched a suspenseful TV show or movie where someone is trying to get away from danger, and they get in their car, turn the key, and the car won’t start?
  • But then, right before the villain gets to the car the engine turns over and the hero speeds away?
  • I think about that scene when I hear the first four lines of this song.
  • It’s all about starting the getaway process from the bad stuff in your life.

------------------------------------------------

  • You may have heard of the millisecond, the microsecond, or even the nanosecond, but did you know that there are units of time way smaller than those?
  • The smallest being planck time which is 10 to the negative 44th of a second.
  • You know, some people plan to wait till the last possible degree of time before they decide to become a follower of Christ,
  • but there is always a possibility that they may be walking a thin “planck.”
  • Here’s Toby Mac on (CALL LETTERS)

------------------------------------------------

  • The Hubble Space Telescope has seen asteroids collide and even galaxies collide,
  • and even though they are terribly disruptive acts, they are also very beautiful to behold,
  • ...at least from our vantage point millions of miles away.
  • That was City on my Knees from Toby Mac, and he mentions worlds colliding in that song,
  • however the collision he’s singing about is one that happens when a non-Christian runs straight into God.
  • If that hasn’t happened to you, I will tell you that it is quite disruptive,
  • but personally, after experiencing it, I can tell you that there is nothing more beautiful in my life.

------------------------------------------------

  • Toby Mac talks about love falling to earth like a crashing wave, but also sailing across the sea.
  • How’s your world today?   Is your sea rocking, making you a little green, a little sick?
  • Or maybe stuff has come crashing in?
  • You know, it may be happening because God’s love tends to shake things up -
  • mainly because He’s the unsinkable boat that you should climb into.

    Scripture References

    Deuteronomy 30:19-20

This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live 20 and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

    ------------------------------------------------

    Joshua 24:15

But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

    ------------------------------------------------

    Romans 5:1-2

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.

    ------------------------------------------------

    1 Corinthians 13:12-13

Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.  And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

    Your Own Experiences

What was the biggest change in your life when you went from being a sinner to a saint?

    ------------------------------------------------

“If we gotta start somewhere why not here.   If we gotta start sometime why not now?”   What’s a project you’ve been putting off?   Identify with your listeners how you struggle starting something.   End with resolving that you’re going to start and invite them to keep you accountable.

    ------------------------------------------------

Describe what you’re looking forward to seeing in heaven.   Explain your certainty that you will see it because of the decision you’ve made for Christ, and how this song talks about that decision.
