Taking It Deeper

Praise to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ
Our God and our King, to Him we will sing
In His great mercy, He has given us life
Now we can be called the children of God
Great is the love that the Father has given us
He has delivered us
He has delivered us
Children of God, sing your song and rejoice
For the love that He has given us all
Children of God, by the blood of His son
We have been redeemed and we can be called
Children of God
Children of God
A mystery is revealed to the universe
The Father above has proven his love
Now we are free from the judgment that we deserve
And so we are called the children of God
Great is the love that the Father has given us
He has delivered us
He has delivered us
Children of God, sing your song and rejoice
For the love that He has given us all
Children of God, by the blood of His son
We have been redeemed and we can be called
Children of God
Children of God
We are the saints
We are the children
We've been redeemed
We've been forgiven
We are the sons and daughters of our God

My two kids are adopted, and after they were born we went into a six month period where officials from the adoption agency would come into our home once a month to see how things were progressing.   At the end of those months we stood before a judge who officially changed our child’s name.   Our child officially became a “Tarrant” at that point.

Furthermore the judge granted all rights and privileges to that child just as if they had been natural born to us.

We went home and had a big party with family and friends.

This song is about that celebration of being accepted.   As such you can tie it in with examples of that.   Here’s one:   Remember starting at a new job and how it felt like you belonged?   How about getting accepted into a fraternity?   How about that small group that gets together to study the bible?   Or that accountability group you attend?

Talk about the acceptance and love you feel with a group and you immediately have something that the listener can identify with that will draw them into this song.

  • My friend’s daughter recently got her first cell phone.
  • She’s so excited that she can now be called (and texted!)
  • If you’re struggling with wondering what God’s purpose is for your life right now, just take a moment to be excited about the fact that you are being called.
  • You may not know the specifics yet, but you can know that you are called into the best family there is.
  • God’s family.
  • Rest assured that He will make His plan known to you.

  • Don’t you love tracking packages?
  • You get to know when the delivery is about to happen, and that’s an exciting thing!
  • If you are a child of God, you can know beyond a shadow of a doubt that God has your life on His track.
  • And as that song says - He’s got your big exciting delivery planned.

  • You may get a little irritated when you watch the video of this song, because they seem to be making a distinction between natural born and adopted kids,
  • but just keep watching, because It turns out OK.
  • It’s at thirdday.com/adopted.

  • Adoption is not always the easiest thing to do.
  • There is a lot of soul searching and prayer beforehand, then during the process all areas of your life get examined.
  • Finally, after the child is placed with you, there’s follow up meetings to make sure everything is going alright
  • ... In other words, adoption is just like living the Christian life.
  • That’s as it should be, because we’re all adopted into God’s family when we accept Jesus Christ as Lord.

  • Do you know a mom or dad that just LOVES their kids?   One that has so much fun with them, and is just joyful around them?
  • That’s the kind of dad that God is.
  • Ephesians 1:5 says it gave God great pleasure to adopt us into His family through Jesus Christ.
  • God LOVES kids!   He wants as many of them that He can get, that’s why He’s the biggest adopter of all!

  •  Growing up, was there one home that had a great rec room, game room, yard, kitchen, or basement where all the kids wanted to hang out?
  • You know, it took a parent who loved having kids around to make that kind of space.
  • God is that kind of parent.
  • He wants you to hang around, invite your friends, and enjoy each other’s company.

  •  What’s it mean to be “redeemed?”
  •  When I hear that word, I think “coupon.”
  •  It means that I have something of value that I can trade in for something else.
  •  That’s exactly what you’ve done as a child of God.
  •  You’ve accepted the value of Jesus’s death and resurrection, a death that took away your sins,
  •  and you’ve redeemed it for eternal life.

  •   Remember, this song (that song) says “children of God, sing your songs and rejoice.”
  •   Are you doing that today?
  •   Or would you instead be singing “children of God, gripe about life and complain?”
  •   You are a child of God, He has your life under His loving control.

    Scripture References

    Ephesians 1: 3-8

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ.

Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.

God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.

So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son.

He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.

He has showered his kindness on us, along with all wisdom and understanding.

    Matthew 7:9-11

Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?

Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?

If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

    Romans 8:14-16

For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.

The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”

The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

    Your Own Experiences

Describe your favorite dad growing up.   It might not have been your own.   Someone who was fun to be around.   Compare that to God, who is the greatest Dad of them all.

Did you have an unofficial “second family” growing up?   Maybe it was your best friend’s mom and dad.   Describe feeling like a family member in another house, and compare that to how God adopts us all.

There is a line in the song that says “the Father above has proven His love.”   How has He proven His love to you?
