Taking It Deeper

Lyrics

God loves a lullaby
In a mothers tears in the dead of night
Better than a Hallelujah sometimes.
God loves a drunkards cry,
The soldiers plea not to let him die
Better than a Hallelujah sometimes.

We pour out our miseries
God just hears a melody
Beautiful the mess we are
The honest cries of breaking hearts
Are better than a Hallelujah

The woman holding on for life,
The dying man giving up the fight
Are better than a Hallelujah sometimes
The tears of shame for what's been done,
The silence when the words won't come
Are better than a Hallelujah sometimes.

We pour out our miseries
God just hears a melody
Beautiful the mess we are
The honest cries of breaking hearts
Are better than a Hallelujah

Better than a church bell ringing,
Better than a choir singing out,singing out.

We pour out our miseries
God just hears a melody
Beautiful the mess we are
The honest cries of breaking hearts
Are better than a Hallelujah

TID-bits

  • Have you ever had to plead with God?
  • There are pleas in this song from mothers, from soldiers, and from those with terminal illnesses.
  • A plea is a pouring out of all the hurt and fear - of everything that we hold inside that troubles us.
  • Because when we bring everything to Him, He can ultimately be everything to us.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • I love the line “We pour out our misery, God just hears a melody.”   You know, the Bible says stuff about making beauty from ashes, and about boasting in our weaknesses.
  • He likes it when we’re open about what lousy husbands, wives, children, friends, and/or neighbors we are.
  • It’s because we have these weaknesses that we’re compelled to turn to Him.   Then His power is able to change us, and that change makes a beautiful melody for others to hear.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • That song has a line that says “beautiful the mess we are.”
  • We often get upset because life gets messy, but think about this:   A messy home can be a blessing because it means we have the money to buy a mess.
  • In the same way, a messy life can be a blessing, because, as it overwhelms us,   it forces us to rely solely on God to clean it up.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Have you ever had a dire circumstance where all you could do was pray?
  • This song (That song) is full of dire circumstances, but it’s also full of hope.
  • Hope that comes from knowing that God wants to hear from you, and help you, at those times.

    Scripture References

    Exodus 2:23-25

    During that long period, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God.  24 God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob.  25 So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.

    Psalm 31:10, 14-16

    My life is consumed by anguish
    and my years by groaning;
    my strength fails because of my affliction,[b]
    and my bones grow weak.

    But I trust in you, LORD;
    I say, “You are my God.”
    My times are in your hands;
    deliver me from the hands of my enemies,
    from those who pursue me.
    Let your face shine on your servant;
    save me in your unfailing love.

    Romans 8:25 - 27

    But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

    In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.  And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.
