Taking It Deeper

At the cross I find the beauty of Your matchless grace

At the cross I see a King who died to take my place

It's the moment that You made me clean and pardoned my soul

Amazing grace that I would be allowed unto Your throne

Not by my own will but solely by Your will alone

I'm unworthy of this love you have shown to me

I see my desperate need

The beauty of the cross is that there's One who has redeemed my soul

Beauty of the cross is that I'm finally free and letting go

Beauty of the cross is that Your grace has found me just as I am

Not by my own works that I may boast or I may come

But simply through your Son the sinless and Exalted One

Only through the cross that I'm made clean to draw near to you

Saved so that you would receive all glory due Your name

Everlasting God from age to age you never change

A true love story remains for all eternity

That all the world would see

My sinful soul could only be

Redeemed by the blood of a sinless King

So you came to the world that You had made

Conquered sin on the cross and You rose from the grave

That's the beauty of the cross

  • It's amazing to actually see a cross being built.
  • How much work it takes to notch the beams and attach them together.
  • All the hatcheting that goes on.  It is an act of destroying a tree.
  • Can you imagine the man who had to build Jesus' cross?
  • Can you picture him chopping away at the wood, each stroke a bit of destruction, another bit of tree flying away?
  • All so that out of this destruction, Jesus, the  Savior could rebuild our world again.
  • Jesus still does that today - if you feel your world is destroyed, He can once again rebuild it.

  • Have you ever felt the pain of being picked last?
  • Wondering why you didn’t measure up?
  • Well the beauty of the cross is that God’s grace chooses you just the way you are.
  • ...See, If someone were to die for you, it would be because they see you to have inestimable worth.
  • And, that’s what Jesus did.
  • ...It was so that you could spend all eternity with Him.
  • You aren’t picked last with Him.
  • You’re picked first.

  • One of the lines here says that because of the beauty of the cross, I’m finally free and letting go.
  • It’s like being on a roller coaster, puttng your hands up high in the air while the shoulder harness keeps you secure.
  • When you accept what Jesus has done for you on the cross, you are free to lift your hands up, giving Him your life’s struggles, while He holds you secure.

  • A lot of times we feel like we’re broken and we gotta fix it.
  • Part of that is true.   We are broken.
  • But we don’t have to fix it.
  • That’s what Jesus did on the cross.
  • ...See,   it’s because sin and God can’t share the same space.   Ultimate bad and ultimate good don’t mix.
  • If it did, then good isn’t good anymore.
  • ...When Jesus died, the bad stuff died with Him,
  • and when He rose again, it was gone.
  • That’s what fixed us.
  • The sin we have is covered over by His sacrifice, leaving our souls free to be with God for all eternity.
  • That’s the beauty of the cross.

  • The author, C.S. Lewis, said “You don't have a soul. You are a Soul. You have a body.”
  • We tend to think of ourselves as body first, soul second,
  • but it’s the other way around.
  • God gets through to our soul, our deepest part, but a Holy God can’t do that if it’s a sinful soul.
  • That’s why I love the line that Jonny Diaz sings near the end:   “My sinful soul could only be...Redeemed by the blood of a sinless King”
  • Do you have the feeling that there’s just something wrong in your soul?
  • That feeling can go away when you accept the beautiful thing that Jesus did on the cross.

  • Jonny Diaz has a line in there that says “Amazing grace, that I would be allowed unto Your throne”
  • What do you feel when, out of the blue, you’re called into the boss’ office?
  • Apprehension?   ...Fear?
  • Well, at the end of life we’re all going to be called into the boss’ office.
  • Will you be able to walk in boldly?
  • You will if you accept the beautiful thing that Christ did on the cross for you.

  • Alright, this is for you if you’re a Christ follower:
  • When you were “saved” was it so that you would get the glory or that God would get the glory?
  • ...See, One should never boast in being saved.
  • That turns people off.
  • Instead, you should always be thankful for your salvation,
  • It helps others see it as real, and God gets the glory.
  • ...There’s a line about that in the middle of this song...

    Scripture References

    1 Corinthians 1:18

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

    Galatians 6:14

May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

    Colossians 1:19-20

For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

    Colossians 2:13b-15

God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

    Hebrews 12:1-3

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,   fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.   Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

    1 Peter 2:24

“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”

    Your Own Experiences

One line of the song says “it’s the moment that you were made clean, and Jesus pardoned your soul.”   Describe when that happened for you.   Then invite others to have that, too.

Describe a time when you were trying to make something happen on your own, and then realized that the best way for it to happen was to let God do it.   Compare that to trying to be good enough to get into heaven.   We can’t do it.   We need Jesus’ sacrifice.

When was the last time your car wouldn’t start?   Did you have sinful thoughts?   Talk about how we’re prone to naturally be sinful.   Then talk about how God saved us through Jesus.
