Taking It Deeper

There's a battle between good and evil
And it's raging inside of me
There's a struggle, it's God and the devil
It's love against the enemy
Whoa no, I'm not giving up now, Whoa oh
Life's a fight of wrong and right that's tearing me apart
Oh but what the cross has done
Yeah the world will try to battle for my heart
But the war is already won
There's a snake that's hiding in the garden
There's a beautiful apple tree
There is trouble on the horizon
But I'm claiming victory
Whoa oh, I’m not giving up now
Oh no, I'm not giving in now, Oh
(Repeat Chorus)

  • They shouldn’t be called donuts.   They should be called “do-nots”
  • It’s because I shouldn’t be eating them, but I love them.
  • Just like Paul said in Romans 7:
  • “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.”
  • Are you with me in this struggle?   Then here’s some encouragement...

  • The strongest Christians I know are those who found God in prison.
  • It’s the same with those who have overcome addictions through God’s help.
  • These people know how God battles for them.
  • And because of that they know not to give up, and not to give in.

  • When we give up our struggles to God
  • He gives down His strength to us.

  • Once again I’ve found myself right between good and evil
  • It’s like I’m standing in the middle of a teeter-totter.
  • “Good” is on my right, and “evil” is on my left.
  • Fortunately, I have God also on my right side and once He takes His seat...
  • Evil is going flying...

  • If you’ve read through the whole Old Testament you’ll see that it’s just one battle after another.
  • But you’ll also see that the victors always had God on their side.
  • That hasn’t changed.
  • God is who you need today, if you’re battling something.

  • The strongest weapon in this world is not one you throw, shoot, or drop.
  • It’s one you let stand.
  • It’s the cross of Christ.
  • What was done there has the power to change the hearts of those who wish to do wrong.

    Scripture References

    James 4:1-3

What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don’t get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

    Deuteronomy 20: 2-4

When you are about to go into battle, the priest shall come forward and address the army. He shall say: “Hear, O Israel, today you are going into battle against your enemies. Do not be fainthearted or afraid; do not be terrified or give way to panic before them. For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory. ”

The Lord will march out like a mighty man, like a warrior he will stir up his zeal; with a shout he will raise the battle cry and will triumph over his enemies.

    Your Own Experiences

What do you battle?   The pull of donuts in the break room?   The desire to gossip?   Talk about the things you do that you do not want to do.

Talk about how the cross of Jesus stands as something you have to go back to time and again.   How you have to remember what He did for you to give you strength to do battle in the world.

Talk about having to negotiate with your kids, and how they work hard to wear you down.   Mention that it all comes down to you having the final word.   Compare that to the cross of Christ having the final word in the negotiation between God and Satan for your heart.   Finish by talking about how Satan still gets us thrown into battle, but the war has been won because of the cross.
