Taking It Deeper

Lyrics

Angels from the realms of glory,
Wing your flight o'er all the earth;
Ye who sang creation's story,
Now proclaim Messiah's birth:
Come and worship,
Come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King!

Shepherds, in the fields abiding,
Watching o'er your flocks by night,
God with man is now residing,
Yonder shines the infant Light;
Come and worship,
Come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King!

Sages, leave your contemplations,
Brighter visions beam afar;
Seek the great desire of nations,
Ye have seen His natal star;
Come and worship,
Come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King!

Saints before the altar bending,
Watching long in hope and fear,
Suddenly the Lord, descending,
In His temple shall appear:
Come and worship,
Come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King!

TID-bits

  • Angels From the Realms of Glory
  • The words to this carol were written by an Irish Newspaper man who would often editorialize against England’s rule.
  • His name was James Montgomery, and his parents were missionaries who died when he was young.
  • As Montgomery started reading his Bible to figure out the power that was behind his parents belief, he started to change. That change was displayed in the poem he wrote that became “Angels from the Realms of Glory.” He published it in his newspaper on Christmas Eve, 1816.
  • It was a chance to look above. To focus on the Angels who proclaimed the birth. It was an opportunity to look beyond differences.
  • It worked. These words from an Irishman who was against English rule ended up being put to music by an Englishman, Henry Smart, and this song became one of the first that ushered in a new joyous style of worship in the Church of England.

  • This song reminds us to be watchful. Verse one is about the angels watching over the earth, verse two is about the shepherds watching over their flocks. The last verse has us watching for the Lord’s return.
  • And through it all each chorus reminds us to come and worship.
  • What will you be watching this year? Kids opening presents? Christmas movies? Those things will bring you Joy.
  • But what if you’re watching your checking account draining? Or a loved one suffering an illness? There is one thing to get you through it… worship Christ the newborn King. Focus on Him, just like the angels.

  • There is one verse of this song that is not usually included, It’s about the Wise Men and the star. It goes: “Sages, leave your contemplations, brighter visions beam afar; Seek the great Desire of nations, Ye have seen His natal star.”
  • The encouragement for you is that “brighter visions do beam afar.” Can you imagine the scene? A huge supernova of a star, surrounded by angels, viewed by the lowliest on earth?
  • It’s a simple message in a dazzling display. Christ shows you a brighter vision, a better Life.
  • If you had been there would you have been able to turn away from it? Then why would you turn and face the darkness today?
