Taking It Deeper

Lyrics

From where I'm standing
Lord, it's so hard for me to see
Where this is going
And where You're leading me
I wish I knew how
All my fears and all my questions
Are going to play out
In a world I can't control

When I'm lost in the mystery
To You my future is a memory

‘Cause You're already there
You're already there
Standing at the end of my life
Waiting on the other side
And You're already there
You're already there

From where You're standing
Lord, You see a grand design
That You imagined
When You breathed me into life
And all the chaos
Comes together in Your hands
Like a masterpiece
Of Your picture-perfect plan

When I'm lost in the mystery
To You my future is a memory

One day I'll stand before You
And look back on the life I've lived
I can't wait to enjoy the view
And see how all the pieces fit

One day I'll stand before You
And look back on the life I've lived
‘Cause You're already there
You're already there
When I'm lost in the mystery
To You my future is a memory
‘Cause You're already there
You're already there
Standing at the end of my life
Waiting on the other side
And You're already there
You're already there

TID-bits

  • C.S. Lewis gives a good perspective of this in his book "Mere Christianity"
  • He talks about how we live life as a straight line drawn on a piece of paper and how things happen sequentially.
  • God, however, sees the entire paper the line is drawn on.

  • Imagine you have a friend flying into town while the big game is playing on TV.
  • He asks if you’d DVR the game, then pick him up at the airport and drive you to your house to watch it with him.   You agree.
  • However, you will have already watched the game while he’s in flight.
  • So when you watch it that evening, you already know the outcome.
  • You won’t get as upset when you see an interception or a fumble.
  • That’s like this song.   God knows the outcome of your life, and if you have accepted Him it’s a GOOD outcome, no matter what!
  • So today’s fumble or interception isn’t that big of a deal.

  • Mark Hall says that this song reminds him of when he’d watch the Thanksgiving parade when he was little.
  • He couldn’t see much standing on the curb, sandwiched between adults.
  • He’d be waiting for the end, for Santa to arrive, but all he could see were old guys in corvettes, and Shriners weaving in and out in their fancy go-karts.
  • If only, He could’ve stood on top of a building, then he could have seen Santa at the end.
  • That’s the perspective this song takes.   It lets you know that God is outside the plane of time, and He already sees your life at the end, and the outcome is good.

  • Lillian Disney, Walt’s widow was cutting the ribbon to open a Disney park, and a company executive said to her “I wish Walt could’ve seen this.”
  • To which Mrs. Disney replied:   “He did.”
  • The creator always has the finished creation in his vision.
  • And since God is the creator of your life, He has your outcome fully in His view, and fully under His control.

    Scripture References

    Psalm 139:1-4

For the director of music. Of David. A psalm. 1 O Lord, you have searched me and you know me.   You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.   Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord.

    --------------------------------------

    Job 23:10

But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.

    --------------------------------------

    Hebrews 4:13

Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

    Your Own Experiences

Talk about knowing outcomes - for instance how you know what will happen to one of your kids if they take a certain course of action.   You know it because you’ve already lived it.   Compare that to how God knows what your outcome will be because He knows everything.   You can take comfort in knowing He knows that, and comfort in knowing that He wants to lead you in the best way.

    ---------------------------------------

Talk about standing at the end of an experience - like bungee jumping - and how you relived the excitement.   Remind the listener that God can’t wait to talk to you about the experience of your life because He already knows the excitement in store for you.

    ---------------------------------------

Talk about waiting for the Doctor to come through the door and how nervous you can be waiting for his consultation.   However, once the diagnosis is presented, you can move on.   This song is about waiting for the door to open, and about the one who has the answers showing up so you can move on.

  1. My friend posted a beautiful picture on Facebook of a double rainbow. The amazing thing is that she saw it before it had ever rained at her house that morning. Before we realize we’ll need to depend upon God for His promise, He’s already provided.
