Taking It Deeper

I will call on Your name
For there's always a way
When you lead me
And when life knocks me down
I am not counted out
For you're with me
And you're with me
Even when it feels like the light is fading
And I've lost my way
Still I'm holding on to the One who's making
All things possible
Even when it feels like my heart is breaking
Hold on, there is strength
Knowing I belong to the One who's making
All things possible
I know mountains can move
I've seen what You can do
In my weakness
So my heart will believe
If I wait I will see
My God doing, what only He can do
My God is strong and mighty
My God is faithful
My hope is in the Lord
For He is able

This is a song about faith.   Think back to a time when you were waiting for a parent to pick you up at school.   Especially that time when they were running late.   Did you panic a bit?   Maybe.   But you held on, waiting for their headlights to turn into the parking lot as it got darker.

That’s this song in a nutshell.   Remember your life situations where you had to hold on while waiting for an answer.   Those are the situations that you can tie into this song.

  • How about waiting for a home loan to go through?
  • How about that moment before a final free throw or field goal is made that will win the game?
  • How about going to sleep the night before, hoping that tomorrow will be a snow day?

Remind the listener that no matter what answer they’re waiting for, it is always easier to sit in the waiting room holding hands with God.

  • The thing about the bell in a boxing ring is that it signals another round is over.
  • The boxer is going to have a chance to regroup.
  • This song is that bell.
  • It says that you’ll be knocked down
  • But you’re not counted out.
  • It also points you to the faith you need - faith that comes from God - the faith that helps you regroup.
  • So here you go...”Ding...”
  • Start by describing a boxing ring, the boxers, the bell
  • Continue with how we all get beaten up in life.
  • Finish with “no matter how hard we get pummeled, we will never be counted out when God is at our ringside.”

  • It was C-3PO who said the possibility of successfully navigating an asteroid field was 3,720 to 1.
  • To which Han Solo replied:   “Never tell me the odds.”   He then successfully flew through the asteroids.
  • This (That) is a great song to go along with that idea.
  • Because with God possibilities become certainties.
  • He likes bringing you through any field of obstacles.

  • I think about this (that) song and I remember taking my toddlers hands and lifting him up over an ottoman in the family room.
  • We’d do that over and over because he loved flying over the obstacle, and I loved lifting him up.
  • God does the same thing with us.   He delights in lifting us up over the things that block our path.
  • (OPTIONAL ENDING)   Are you holding on to the one who makes “all things possible?”

  • Anytime you watch the Miss America pageant, it always comes down to the last moment when the two final contestants close their eyes, hold hands, and wait for Regis or whoever to name the first runner up.
  • Then the camera zooms in on the other person, Miss Rhode Island or whoever, to start the tears amidst thunderous applause.
  • This (That) song is about that kind of moment in your life.   It’s about holding onto God while you’re waiting for Him to crown you with an answer.

    Scripture References

    Philippians 4:13

I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

    Matthew 19:26

Jesus looked at them and said,   “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

    Matthew 17:20

He replied,   “Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith   as small as a mustard seed,   you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move.   Nothing will be impossible for you.   ”

    Your Own Experiences

What goal did God help you achieve lately that seemed extremely huge at the beginning?

What was something that you had to wait on daily? Like maybe a check in the mail?   Talk about how our faith is something we wake up and practice everyday.   Sometimes we practice it moment by moment.   Finish by letting the listeners know that we can make it through day by day, moment by moment, because we know that one of these moments he’s going to bring a result.

What was something that your heart believed even when your head was telling you “no?”   Like maybe your dad who finally found faith? Maybe it was finally finding the strength, through God, to beat the battle over weight issues.   Maybe it was finally finding a spouse.   All of these are examples of how God answers years of faithful prayers.   All of these can tie into the first verse of this song, because they are all issues that beat you down but can ultimately be defeated.
