Taking It Deeper

Lyrics

(Chorus)
Bless the Lord, O my soul
O my soul
Worship His holy name
Sing like never before
O my soul
I'll worship Your holy name

The sun comes up, it's a new day dawning
It's time to sing Your song again
Whatever may pass, and whatever lies before me
Let me be singing when the evening comes

Chorus

You're rich in love, and You're slow to anger
Your name is great, and Your heart is kind
For all Your goodness I will keep on singing
Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find

Chorus

And on that day when my strength is failing
The end draws near and my time has come
Still my soul will sing Your praise unending
Ten thousand years and then forevermore

(Chorus x2)

Jesus, I'll worship Your holy name
Lord, I'll worship Your holy name

Sing like never before
O my soul
I'll worship Your holy name
Jesus, I'll worship Your holy name
I'll worship Your holy name

TID-bits

Check your watch, or your cell phone - whatever you use to tell time.   Even if the battery is dead, time is still moving.   And if time is still moving, then this is the song to sing.

This song is about going through the day and finding out that God is to be praised no matter what is going on, or in what lies ahead.

So anytime you find yourself with a free minute, remind yourself and your listeners to worship His Holy name.

Especially if your battery is dead and you need to be recharged.

-----------------------------

  • I love this (that) song because there are times I'm alone in the car, thinking of the 10,000 reasons to be depressed
  • Reasons like:  There's no money in the bank, the car needs fixed, my house is a mess.
  • Then the words of this (that) song remind you to focus on God instead,
  • And it helps you feel better.

------------------------------

  • There are times when our body is weak.   It may be from sickness, or fatigue.
  • So it’s a good thing that this song doesn’t say “Bless the Lord, O my body
  • Instead it invites us to let our soul bless the Lord.
  • No matter what condition our body is in, our soul can always give Him praise.
  • Think about that when you hear the third verse of this song.   The one that says:
  • “On that day when my strength is failing, the end draws near and my time has come.   Still my soul will sing Your praise unending, Ten thousand years and then forevermore.

------------------------------

  • This (That) song shares so much in common with Amazing Grace.
  • If you’re not sure about that, I invite you to really listen to these words.
  • Like Amazing Grace, this (that) song is about finding God’s grace through the journey of life.
  • Amazing Grace says”   “When we've been here ten thousand years...bright shining as the sun. We've no less days to sing God's praise... then when we've first begun.
  • And this song says “Still my soul will sing Your praise unending, ten thousand years and then forevermore.
  • Today is one day in your ten thousand plus year journey.   What can we do to help you find His grace?

------------------------------

  • The challenge in life is to always worship, no matter what.
  • To always give thanks to God in every circumstance.
  • This is the song to do that - Here’s something you can try:
  • If you feel prompted to grumble or complain today, look at your watch,
  • and then sing the chorus to this song in time to each second ticking by.
  • You’ll be giving yourself the gift of worship, and reminding yourself of what this song proclaims - to bless the Lord, in whatever may pass and in whatever lies before you.

----------------------------

  • Matt Redman states that the beauty of the song is due to its simplicity and gentle arrangement which leaves plenty of room for the vocals to really "sing like never before."
  • One other thing he said is that when they first played it, it was like the voices of the congregation were the main instruments of the song.

----------------------------

(FROM MICHELLE ROSS AT KSWP)
  • Our pastor likes to point out that in this passage of scripture David is "telling" his soul to bless the Lord.
  • Sometimes that can be hard to do -
  • It's like telling your body "Hey get off the couch and exercise."
  • We do it because it is good for your physical body
  • In the same way we can "tell" our spirit "Bless the Lord"
  • When we do that we keep our spiritual man in good shape.

----------------------------

  • You know that verse about praying continually? It’s 1 Thessalonians 5:17.
  • This song is the companion to that.
  • It’s first verse is all about the beginning of the day
  • The second verse gives you reasons to praise Jesus as you continue on.
  • And the third verse is about the ending of your days.

----------------------------

  • Clean water to drink
  • A bed to sleep in
  • Cheesecake
  • Everybody has a list of things they are thankful for.
  • And everything we have to be thankful for comes out of God’s goodness.
  • Even the things on the list we’re not thankful for.
  • Because those tend to draw us closer to Him.

----------------------------

  • If I, or my kids, want to complain about what I don’t have I remember these words:
  • “When you focus on what you don’t have, you get depressed.   When you focus on what you do have, you get blessed.”
  • You can start by thinking about the words to this song, right now, to get you started...

----------------------------

  • Barbara Ann Kipfer wrote a book called “14,000 Things to be Happy About.”
  • It is what it says: Just a list of things she started in a small spiral notebook decades ago.
  • She said it was her way of paying attention, and taking note of the little things.
  • The book was a million seller.
  • She’s still keeping track.   Now it’s on the website thingstobehappyabout.com
  • The list is now over 140,000 items
  • Isn’t it funny how we need to be reminded about how much we’re blessed?
  • You and I need to stop focusing on the few things that bring us stress, and instead focus on the 10,000 things that can bring us joy.

----------------------------

  • Did you have a toy box when you were a kid?
  • Remember how you’d get all the toys out and yet you’d never know which one to play with?
  • This (that) song reminds me of that.
  • It reminds me that I have all these reasons to give praise to Jesus.
  • And yet when troubles come my way, I often seem to have to search for one.
  • In reality, I could pick up one of thousands of reasons laying at my feet.
  • The truth is...when I start to focus on Him, and my reasons to praise Him,   it’s like cleaning up a room full of clutter.
  • I start to see Him more clearly, and I get a clearer picture of how He’s going to help me through my troubles.

    Phillippians 4:12

all my inmost being, praise his holy name.

    Praise the Lord, my soul,

and forget not all his benefits–

    who forgives all your sins

    and heals all your diseases,

who redeems your life from the pit

and crowns you with love and compassion,

who satisfies your desires with good things

so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

    Your Own Experiences

Share with the listeners what you are focusing on today that is keeping you from focusing on God.

    ----------------------------

Every time you play this song you could develop you own little one-sentence micro radio feature and name the one thing you’re thanking God for at that given time.

    ----------------------------

Sometimes you just have to sing his praise - literally sing - to move from despair to hope.   Has that ever happened to you?

    ----------------------------

What is not happening for you?   What are you waiting on?   Can you sing praise to the Lord even while you’re waiting for it?
